you don;t need to install win98 at all. just enable cd booting in your bios, wang in the winxp disk and there you go. it will ask for your win98 install disk during the installation - this is to make sure that you own win98 and are only 'upgrading'.

You may be running into trouble because you have too much ram for Win98SE. That's right, the four sticks of 512MB ram is way too rich for Win98SE to handle, since it can only handle up to 768MB of ram. I have 1 GB of memory myself and I had to limit the amount Windows "sees" to 768MB. If you want to do the same, you can do so by editing the System.ini file. You need to add the line MaxPhysPage=30000 under the 386Enh heading. Maybe this will help alleviate the "not enough available memory" problem. Ultimately, you may just want to upgrade completely to WinXP if you want to take advantage of all your 2GB of ram, since it doesn't have the same memory limitations Win98SE has.

Hey I just recently bought some new parts, to make myself a new pc. Now I have a problem, I have Windows 98 SE, and Windows XP Pro Upgrade. Everything seems to be working ok, until Windows 98 setup restarts for the first time(copying files blah blah blah). It then tries to boot from the CD, or the HDD, instead of resuming setup. If I select Boot from HD, it says there is not enough available memory - CMOS says there is 2GB of available system memory. Im really stuck as to what Im supposed to do. Below is a list of my parts, and configuration.

AMD Athlon 64 FX-51 CPU.
ASUS SK8N Motherboard.
2 GB Corsair Twin-X, Dual Channel, DDR400 = 4 x 512MB Dimms.
2 x Western Digital 10,000 RPM Raptor 36 GB HDs.
ATI 9800 XT 256 MB.
Sound Blaster Audigy 2 - (thats not important tho)
Sony 16x DVD
LiteOn 8x DVR-RW

The two HDs are run in RAID 0, 64k stripe size. The motherboard has the Promise R20378 RAID controller on it.
The HDs are connected to the Mobo using SATA cables. And partitioned in FAT32.

Once i gave up on trying to install Win98 using the RAID setup, I decided to try and install Win98 on just one of the HDs. And again this didn't work.

Anyways I'm out of ideas, and looking for any input.
If you have any questions concerning the setup or whatever, just post away.

Welcome to PCstats!!!
Let me be the first to say that is a very impressive rig
Why dont you try to install winXP directly? go to www.bootdisk.com and download the XP bootdisks...

I pulled two sticks of RAM, and got win98 installed.

Using the XP boot disks didnt work - said I/O error.

But after win98 is installed, it doesnt recognize either of my optical drives. And I used one of them to intall 98.
Because of this I can't install WinXP, or any drivers. I tried another DVDRom, from my old rig...and still no go.
Now before its suggested, the jumpers are set correctly, the drives have power, and the IDE cable is connected to the mobo, and the drive.

Any help would be appreciated greatly.

No worries. I decided to start from scratch. I re-did the raid array, partitioned as fat32, formatted and then used the XP boot disks. Once there I installed the SATA drivers, and the RAID drivers...from there I installed WinXP without a problem. I can't really understand what the problem was before...but it all worked out in the end. Im enjoying the new rig.

Thanks fer your help guyz.

Disagree about 2GB being way too rich for Win98SE (but is probably more than you need). There are many who run 1GB + and some who have gone to 2GB. I am posting this on a PC with 1GB (dual boot for Win2k & Win98SE). The "limit" of 768MB does NOT exist. You do need to set VCache settings in system.ini. Therre is a bulletin on Microsoft support that puts this myth to rest.

Perhaps your dual boot with Win2K allows you to run 1 GB... I also have 1 GB installed on my system and I have tried everything I know of to get my Win98SE to recognize all of it but it just won't boot unless I limit the ram size to 768MB. Can you give me a link to the Microsoft webpage that addresses this?
