View Full Version : xp pro file sharing
in xp pro when you share files on a network (ie accessed by \computername) is there an way to password what you are sharing??
Not as such...

Shared file security in XP is based on user permissions, so you can allow or deny access to the share based on usernames and passwords.

By default, XP shares are open to the 'everyone' group, meaning everyone can access the share with no restrictions. If you remove this and allow specific users or authenticated users only, someone connecting to the share remotely would have to provide a valid username and password for a user on your system.

The hidden 'administrative shares,' C$, D$ etc. are good example, as these require an administrative username and password to access.

If you want to password a share specifically, you can create a user specially for the purpose and give only that user access to the share.

If you create user account on the computer hosting the files and then speciify permissions for the groups then only those users will be able to access them. If someone logs onto XP using on of those accounts they would be able to access the files, otherwise they will be prompted for a usr and pass before they can view your computer.

If you wanted to password protect specific folders give 'everyone' to your system but specify group permissions for a folder or partition or something.
