Greetings,

I've been having problems lately with WinXP when booting up. Applications that are autoloading seem to freeze up and I'm having to reboot several times just to get going, it becoming increasingly frustrating. I'm of the mind there are too many apps trying to load at once therefore freezing the system (non-responsive). How can I eliminate some of these apps from auto loading?

Regards........

You may have some ad-ware or spy-ware that has been deviously installed on you system by websites or other 'free' applications.

Get Ad-Aware 6.0 from here: www.lavasoftusa.com. Update it (utility built in to the program) and let it complete its scan and remove anything it finds.

Another thing to try is Norton System Works. You can run the WinDoctor application of the NSW CD (don't install the program) and it will scan the regesry and ActiveX components and then has an option to automatically correct any problems it finds.

As well you can use the service.msc tool to disable the extra services Windows XP likes to initilize on start-up. Messenger, Help and Support, Alerter, Remote Regestry are a few I can think to set to manual/disabled. You should be able to find a pretty complete list by doing a Google search or something.

Hope this is helpful... Good Luck!

you can unload unnessasary items in msconfig under the startup tab.
To acomplish this in the start menu click the run icon type msconfig..... You Got The Idea!!!

Thanks....... that worked, but now it appears I have another problem.

Something is puting IE icons on my desktop (and in my Favorites section) and has changed my home page to something other than what it should be. I delete the icons on the desktop, but when I reboot there they are back again......... how do i get rid of these things?

I'd just get Adaware 6 like Westy recommended - update it and run it. That should sort out your problem. If I were you, I'd run it, reboot, and run it again.
