View Full Version : Can't activate Hibernation under XP
Whenever I try to activate Hibernation I get the following error message :<BR><BR>The process cannot access the file because it is being used by another process.<BR><BR>What would solve this problem?
eXodus what programs do you have running in memory? Can you take a picture of the processes that are running in task manager?
Here are the running processes right after reboot :<BR><BR>avgcc32.exe<BR>avgserv.exe<BR>csrss.exe<BR>explorer.exe<BR>iexplore.exe<BR>inetinfo.exe<BR>jusched.exe<BR>lsass.exe<BR>mdm.exe<BR>nvsvc32.exe<BR>services.exe<BR>SMAgent.exe<BR>smss.exe<BR>spoolsv.exe<BR>svchost.exe<BR>svchost.exe<BR>svchost.exe<BR>svchost.exe<BR>svchost.exe<BR>System<BR>System Idle Process<BR>taskmgr.exe<BR>wcmdmgr.exe<BR>winlogon.exe<BR><BR>BTW I think the file for hibernation doesn't even exist.
try doing a safe mode boot nad then enabling it in there!
Hibernation can't be activated from a safe boot...

Open your File Explorer (file window, whatever you want to call it)<BR>Click on Tools<BR>Click on Folder Options<BR>Click on the View tab<BR>Uncheck the "Hide protected Operating System Files"<BR>Click OK<BR><BR>Go to your Root (usually C<img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif" border="0"> drive folder<BR>you should see a file called "hiberfil.sys"<BR>delete it<BR><BR>You should now be able to enable your hibernate function normally<BR>
I already tried this, the problem is there have never been any hiberfile.sys on my root drive. I even created one to do some tests and no success.
put it this way, you aren't really missing anything with the hibernation - you might as well use stand by - that is much better!

There was a windows patch that fixed some hibernation problems.
I prefer hibernation to standy by since its less prone to data loss upon power failure. Still, MS ships its product with such a feature and I can't figure why I should use some work around.

You might be right about this one but I'm sure their activation system never missed a single user...

Hi, I got the same problem a long time ago. Some program block the acces to this file, check if you have some program as Nero or burnin program
or Demon tool.... Remove this software till you can activate the file,
Then after activate it, just reload the software and everything should
work....
I hope it will help.....
See ya and good luck (this is not an exhaustive list of program.. You have
to find out wich one Lock this file acces.... This two program were my problems.)

I had that issue with 2000 a few months ago. It was driving me nuts. Since I've got the format/reinstall process down to a science, I just dumped the system and tried again and it was fine. *shrug* That's my solution for everything though.

first, have you disabled your page file, i think its needed for hibernation for some reason
the only thing i see in your processes that cud be an issue is inetinfo.exe
which is either IIS, or possibly virus
http://www.liutilities.com/products/wintaskspro/processlibrary/inetinfo/
so if your running IIS, try stopping the services and see if you can hibernate....otherwise, fix the virus ;)
and make sure you did not disable system access to the hard drive where the pagefile is stored
