View Full Version : Why does WinXP change my settings?

The problem: WinXP insists on reversing several settings for me on reboot. I'm at a loss to know why. The only idea I had is that it's because this is a laptop (a new venture for me...I've always used desktops). Win 95, 98, ME all had an option buried somewhere in system properties or something allowing you to change the role of the computer (ie from desktop to server so it would manage memory better). I can't find the option for this in XP. Does it still exist?

Here are a few examples of what's going on:

1. the option to "show window contents while dragging" (display properties>appearance>effects...). I enable, windos disables on restart. I hate draging around window frames. I don't know why.
2. In Tweak UI. The option to "prevent applications from stealing focus" (general-->focus). Won't stick. This one is especially annoying. I use my cell phone to connect to the 'net (DSL speed for cheap!). If the connection is idle for as little as 5 seconds, my provider drops me. I use a download manager to constantly download junk files. Keeps the connection active as I surf or check email. The DLM constantly jumps in front of me, interrupts my typing. Annoying.
3. Again in Tweak UI. There's an option to "Log on automatically at system start up" (logon-->autologon). Same thing. Always reverts. I've decided to stop using this after reading about a hundred warnings to password protect my windows user, but still...IT SHOULD DO WHAT I SAY!!

So...any Ideas on how to fix this would be greatly appreciated.

Joe
