"Cu and AlCu Heatsinks...Does it really make that much of a difference?

I've been shopping around for a CPU fan and Heatsink and some of the fans i've been look for to put on my AMD 2600+ are the Zalman's CNPS7000A-Cu and CNPS7000A-AlCu and the Thermaltake. They look nice and they seem to be very silent.

The actual question behind this is What is the difference between an all-copper and an aluminum/copper heatsink. What is the difference between their thermal dissipation/conductivity? And which is the fan in the market that has the best?"

-----

To answer your question, the short answer is "yes."

Thermal conductivity is a matter of material properties, and in that regard copper has significant advantages over aluminum. Copper weighs more, and costs more, but is a superior metal if used properly. As with all heatsinks, the differences come down to heatsink design more than anything - so do your research before buying, and never buy a heatsink based on appearances alone - that does not guarantee high performance.

For more information - check out www.frostytech.com, there are over 300 heatsinks reviewed there.

Best Regards,
Max Page
Editor - PCstats.com
