did you upgrade from winme to 2k pro ... or did you format and do a fresh install of win2k? ...

this could be the reason for you getting errors like this. alot of the time upgrade from a 9x windows os (or winme which is pretty much 98 ) to a NT based windows OS (win2k) ... windows just doesnt like to play nice between those two.

so i would suggest this

1. let windows search the cd. it should be on there somewhere but could most likely be a hidden file.

2. do the current windows updates. and see if that will fix it if the first suggestion i said doesnt work.

3. as much as i hate to say it lol ... i would format the computer and do a fresh install of win2k.

make sure you have all your drivers that are needed before you format though. (atleast the ones to connect to the internet to get the other drivers needed. if windows doesnt install them for you.

also make sure you back up all data you dont want to loose.

I hope this helps you out ... and welcome to pcstats

Pimpin Joe: I upgrade it from WinME to Win2000 Pro and it is not a fresh installation.

I shall answer your questions according to your point:

1. I did let Windows search bit to no luck, Windows could not find it.

2. I do the Windows Update the moment it is done with the upgrade, which is earlier point 1 I have mention above.

3. It not quite possible to format as it contains quite important stuff inside and the size is quite huge.

Any more possible ways ?

Thanks

i really cant tell you anything else ... sometimes you get a bad install. i would find a way to back up all your data you need to keep (which you should always do on a regular basis)

i would suggest either getting someone with a computer with hdd space to hold your files until you have a fresh install done. or if you have another computer network with that and transfer the file to it.

or you could get yourself a cd burner or even a dvd burner if you have that much to back up . will take longer then putting it on someelse else computer through a network setup .. but will still work.

you could also just buy another harddrive and put the files on that disk.

I would also suggest partitioning your harddrive into two drives. one for the OS, and one for other data. like all your important stuff .

You could try doing a repair install, though I'm not sure whether it would work in this circumstance.

To do this:
boot from your 2000 CD,

Choose the ‘press enter to set up Windows now’ option.
Press F8 to skip through the EULA.
Now press R to begin a repair installation of your current install.
Your system will go through the entire install process, but will not attempt to replace any of your existing data. It will simply reinstall the system files and redetect all hardware. Once the process has completed, your computer will reboot.

You will not lose any data, though you might lose some settings and you will need to repatch and service pack your system.

I have not tried this on a 2000 system that has been upgraded from an older OS... I'd say the best way would be to buy or borrow a second drive and get your data off, then start fresh, but the repair install is another option at least...

MikeD,
Thanks for your advice, I will defintely try it. But I encounter another problem. The error message is as below:

"A error using COM/OLE occurs. Pls check the installation of COM on your computer."

Now I can only CUT or COPY but not PASTE. I have try to burn my data in the burner but the system does not allow me to do.
Secondly, the pc will pause for a full 4 min on the login screen before it allow me to enter my login password, and the shutdown time is also a long duration of another 4mins. I have update my Norton AV patches to the latest version and do a scan and I have try to scan online using TREND Micro. Both show the same results: No Virus detected.
So I would really appreciate if anyone can help me on all these problems.

Yes I'd say a repair install as MikeD says or a format is required. I've never been a fan of Microsoft's built in burning software - you could just get a copy of Nero Burning ROM, Alcohol or other CD burning software. If you have a lot of data, it might be easier to get another hard drive if you have one spare and copy the data across as MikeD suggests.
