hi
i wonder if theres'a third party app out there that does the same as chkdsk /f /r for win2k pro but faster than chkdsk; i have a lot of big HD's and when i do occasionally do chkdsk /f /r (b/c i want it to be throrough), it takes more than a day esp for this computer (5 big HD's)

also, just out of curiosity, i wonder if the process takes as long if u have little data or a lotof data in these big HD; would it be faster if the hd is more empty?

lol thats just 2 much gosu talk for us anyway i'm not shure if there's any 3rd party apps that would perform the same but what are you checking for, errors? spyware? also yes they would be faster if there was less date on the hd (less for it to check so it seems logical enough) also what are you'r system specs, a slow cpu might be the problem

well, first defrag, second check disk scans all your files for errors/corruption as for it taking a day, how big are these 5 hd's i have a 160 gig (actually 149, but u know good ol 1000k = 1 mb crap) and it takes about 7 min or so to scandisk at 75% disk free, check this out it might help, it might not

well that link doesnt work for some reason so here's the link (text veriosn)

http://download.com.com/3120-20-0.html?qt=check+disk&tg=dl-2001

I think chkdsk also checks the physical surface of the disk for errors but it depends on how you use it. If you are just doing it from within Windows (the way that does not require a restart) it does not fix errors, and does not check the disk for physical errors. This means it will only check files and file structures, so it will not take that long. If you are doing it from the command line using chkdsk /f /r, then yes, it will take a long time (though with mine it only takes 30-60 min), and it will scan the files/file systems as well as the physical surface of the disk. The file system checking takes no time at all practically, most of the time is spent checking the physical surface.
