Well this s pretty specific but those of you in Canada who are use Rogers Cable Internet can upgrade your speed to 5Mbps down and 800Kb/s up by simply buying a faster modem which costs $80CDN (after rebate, $100 before)!

Just ordered my new modem and it should be here by Wednesday.

Oh btw yes the monthly service charge stays the same.

Well I'll do some speed tests tonight with my old modem (which is suppose to be 3Mbps) and compare to the new one. I have a few friends who are on Rogers Extreme already and they say you can really feel the difference. Boy I hope so!

Wow I hate to say it but... that seems a little shifty to me. Everything I know about cable modems says the speed is controlled by the internal firmware provisioning. When I worked for Road Runner (US cable ISP for those that don't know) we could reprovision a modem over the phone/online to upgrade their speed or fix certain problems.

Haha well my internet speeds have certainly gone up! Had to call and complain because at first it was slower! ;)

My buddy is about the try the 'extreme' version... I wonder if you can purchase a modem from the states and run it with rogers extreme? I'm sure there'll be something on e-bay...

Hi. Yesterday I called to upgrade to Rogers Internet extreme. I have the modem and requested the switch. They said I should notice the difference within 24 hours. Now, of course they also say nothing is guaranteed because of site congestion ect, (problems that are not on their end). What I'm wondering is, is there a way I can check to verify that they really have "upped my speed"? In other words, if I don't notice an increase in downloads and uploads, is there a way for me to tell it is due to Rogers not applying the upgrade, as opposed to network congestion or even a hardware limitation on my end? Any information would be greatly appreciated.

Welcome to PCstats :D

go to www.dslreports.com and run their speedtest. That should tell you your exact download and upload speeds...

Rogers Tech support recommends you use www.toast.net/performance for your speed tests. You will find that if you use more than one site you will get a more accurate idea of what your speed really is. You can find many test sites at http://www.dslreports.com/stest?more=1

Please read the forum posts for Rogers Extreme. Currently many users are experiencing severely degraded performance whenever they try to upload and download at the same time. Thus rendering various P2P programs completely useless (as well as anything else that uploads and downloads simultaneously).

So if you use the internet for more than surfing and emailing I would stay away from Rogers Extreme until the solution has been fixed. Also, Rogers has offloaded their newsgroup to giganews and capped the speed to two connections at 32kBs (64kBs) downloads. Going from 550-600kBs to 64kBs in newsgroups and calling it an "enhancement" has many users upset.

I strongly suggest that before you purchase a modem read the problems laid out at: http://www.dslreports.com/forums/rogers

Hope this helps.
