Hey guys, i am tyring to fix a neighbours computer. Its a fairly old machine (200mhz, Win98.). He is having some problems opening attatchments. We click on the attachment sign, then go to open it. And it says, there is no application for this file. Please go to folder options under view, and make create one. Now im pretty smart, but i have no clue how to do this. I tryed doing what it said but there is no folder options..........He uses wordpad to open his attatchments. So i tryed ot open another different attatchmant, and it works all well n fine and opens word pad. but just when you think its good, it freeze and performs an illegal operation?? ANy ideas? at all?

Thanks again

Stevo, that message means that there is no application that can handle that file type. For instanse, you know that .doc files are documents created by/for Microsoft Word. Well if you are trying to open a .doc file and Word is not installed on that computer you will get that message. All you can really do is have a look at the file extension and see if you can determine what program is needed to open it. Otherwise you could search google or something to see what the usual handlers for those file types are. Bottom line, without the right software you aren't going to open the file.

but you see, it was working before, its just stopped working. I know that it will support the format, he uses wordpad (and it supports .doc files). Thats my questions you see, its only just started
try doing a virus scan for one. .. you can do one for free at www.pandasoftware.com/activescan ... this is by far one of the best antivirus programs out there as well.
then run ad aware to check for spyware.
if it worked before and just stopped for no reason .. this could be a possibility. if not .. ask your friend if there has been any software recently installed on teh computer .. if so try removing it and see if that helps.
you may also want to run a registry cleaning program. if this doesnt help your specific problem ... it will still help in a systems overall performance.
