hey guys , if anyonwe can help me on this problem, i would appreciate it. well, my friend has cable, i wnet to go fix it. i took out all spyware and i installed norton antivirus. then i restarted thge computer and the internet connection was blocked or something. the activity light on the modem was lit, which i assume means that its connected to the computer, but when i try connecting to a website, or running a program like aol instant messenger, it doesnt connect. can someone help me with this. by the way, i went back and uninstalled the antivirus and i put back all the spyware from quarentine, and that didnt help the fact.<BR><BR>specs:<BR>win 98<BR>internet explorer 6<BR>optimum online cable
try just unplugging the modem from the comp and powering it down. this is reseting it. see if this helps. and get rid of the spyware, you don't want that stuff on there. let me know if that helps<BR>

Is there any kind of proprietary software on the computer for the specdific isp he is using? If there is, take it off! That is unless there is stuff he can't live without that is included with the software. Windows is meant to automatically connect with cable connections. Usually the software that isps provide you with just complicate the process. If at all possible get a copy of Norton Systemworks. It has a lot of utilities that are really useful for diagnosing problems like this. Also, what did you use to take off the spyware? If you haven't already done it, get Adaware and/or Spybot Search and Destroy. These are both free utilities and clean out all the spyware and adaware you might have missed. If none of those things work, I'm not sure what to do....eer...format the thing?!?
if you are running a firewall like Zone Alarm make sure you check both boxes of ... "allow" outgoing "DNS". It's found in the advanced section of the firewall prefrences. Dave
