I'll start by saying I have read the related topic at the top of this forum and I have addressed all those issues...

Ok, my girlfriend's computer has recently become crippled when it comes to web browsing. If you try to look up any website it takes FOREVER to load and she is using a cable broadband connection. The interesting thing is that when you look at Task Manager while you try and look up any website, all of a sudden the CPU usage pegs at 100% and stays there the entire time.

I have tried:
Virus Scan (Norton is installed and detects nothing)
An online virus scan (went to Symantec website and used their online scan)
Ad-Aware - no spyware detected
Clearing the IE cache
Re-running the network setup wizard
Defrag
CheckDisk
Windows Update

The system is using:
WindowsXP Home (SP1)
Intel Celeron 1.2Ghz
512 Mb Ram

I would prefer NOT to have to format the HD and reinstall everything but if I can't get this problem resolved I may have to...

I'm open to suggestions...

Thanks!

use mozilla to go to the microsoft website, or just use another computer and download ie6 again then reinstall it...that might work
go into command prompt and type in

ipconfig /release

then type in

ipconfig /renew

see if that helps any.

*edit*

also try clearing all your temp. internet files. by right clicking internet explorer - properties - delete internet cookies.

try this first before the command prompt.

I know this probably won't help since you have already tried with Adaware, but also try Spybot Search & Destroy. One usually cleans up what the other can't get.

As for IE6, you can get that from the Windows cd, just go to uninstall windows components, and then install it from the cd.

When you go to the task manager, look at what process is taking up all the processor activity. Though lots of times all you will see are cryptic processes, it might give you some clue as to what is messing up her comp.

Hey, just an update on this problem:
It was actually Norton Internet Security that was causing the problem. Removed it and installed ZoneAlarm instead and the internet runs great now. Thanks for the suggestions!
