Greetings wise ones,

I recently purchased a new PC and would like tips regarding moving old PC files to the new unit.

I'm a middle aged cat-woman who needs help becoming a serious techy - seriously.

My first step is to buy a new PC capabale of being a good media (visual) workhorse. One that can
also handle my Evercrack habit (I know, it's baaaddd!)

My second step will be building my own machine.

This is my first post on this site, be gentle with me!

Hi mendiant, welcome to PCStats!!!

Congrats on your new PC. One of the first things you need to do to become a creditable techy is to know what's in your machine. Did you buy your computer from a pre-fab company (like Dell or Gateway) or did you have someone put it together for you (a friend or local computer store)? Either way, get some help and find out what cpu (that's the main processing chip that runs your computer), motherboard (the large circuit board into which everything plugs), ram, and video card you have. The more you know about your system, the more people here can help you as well. I'm sure others here will have great advice, but one suggestion I have to transfer files from your old PC to your new one is to take the hard drive out of your old PC and connect it to your new one. Then you will be able to access all your files on the hard drive from your new computer.

The guys here are really friendly and helpful. I got a lot of great tips from them when I was first starting out. They even miss you when you don't post for a while!

Welcome to PCStats mendiant!

Taking the harddrive out of your old machine and putting it in the new one will probobly be the best way to get those files moved over. As well it will be a great opportunity to peel the side panel off the new computer and see what's going on inside (if you haven't already). I might also suggest leaving the old harddrive in the new computer as a secondary drive, this could be very handy for backing up documents and music and such in case the operating system craps-out and you need to format the primary drive!
