Start, Run, "msconfig", Selective Startup, ect. ect.

I find that Windows tends to complain about MSCONFIG ('You have entered diagnostic startup.. I'm going to keep nagging you until you revert' etc) -- if you're using 2000 or XP, you may find it easier to go to Start->Run and type 'Services.msc' -- that should open the Services Control Panel. Just go to Messenger, open its properties, click 'Stop', and change the Dropdown to 'This Service is Disabled'.
Good luck.
Yes, in my opinion it is a little easier just to use services.msc. You also get some information about the services that can be useful, but ultimately I end up just plugging the service name into Google. Either way... take your pick :)

i just used msconfig and disabled the services. Windows bothered me once or twice, but then it stopped...forever i guess.
