I have a Dell 4600 W/ 10/100 on MB and a homemade AMD XP 2000 W/ a SOYO MB W/ 10/100. I tried to use a crossover cable to network the two. No luck. I do not want to share internet conn since both have a dialup modem. I only want to share a printer and files. Do i need a switch or Hub. Both are have Win XP Home installed. Any advise would be appreciated.
BTW: The AMD puter was my first home build and other than a bad HD cable i had no prob. I was ,to say the least ,very suprised.
The crossover should work... what problems are you having?

The computers do not seem to see each other. I have used the setup wizard and also set the addresses manually. The printer was setup for sharing and also files. The work group only shows the one computer and it's files.
Sounds liek you need to install the NWLink IPX/SPX/NetBIOS compatible transport protocol. Ive had problems with machines not seeing each other, installing that fixed it.

Ok, heres what you do...go to control panel - network connections then right click on your local area connection and go to properties
under properties you should see "this connection uses the following items" you are going to need to add one. it would be unter protocols and be the NWLink one. Hope that helped.

As well, make sure both the computers are using the same workgroup name. Have you done any tweaking to the services.msc list? Disableing some services you don't need for stand alone use can really mess up your networking.
I was just thinking that it could be the workgroup names. Also are you absolutely sure its a crossover cable. Cause once I was using a straight-through labeled cable from my router to my hub and then I compared the connectors amd realized it was a crossover...

Workgroup name is the same and it's a crossover cable. Will try the install.
Thanks for the input.

Just today had time to work on the network problems. I manually assigned the addresses again, checked the work group name and downloaded the suggested transport protocol. SUCCESS!
Thanks very much to all who responded.
Glad u solved ur problems. Please stick around, you will learn a lot ;)
