Welcome to PCStats rob!
First of all, which OS are you using?
Yellow question marks in device manager usually mean the drivers for that device have not been installed. Sound drivers should be included on the motherboard CD if you are using onboard sound. If you you've got a PCI sound card a driver CD should have come with it. If you've got no CD you will want to go to the manufacturer's website for the motherboard or soundcard (which ever you've got) and look up the model name/number for you part so you can download and install drivers. Even if you have a CD it may be a good idea to get more up-to-date drivers from the web.
Regarding Windows Update. Often when I have done a fresh install windows update won't do the scan until after I run the Internet Connection Wiz. You can launch the Wiz using the 'Setup' button found on the 'Connections' tab in the Internet Options. After running the ICW it's always worked for me... no idea how or why though.
ok ran the connection wizard, no different ... I've never had this problem and it's driving me nuts !!
oh and I'm running xp Home
XP home sucks. It never worked on my PC. I upgraded to pro and it works perfectly. Im sorry if I'm no help but thats the way it was for me....
XP Home works fine... the only thing I've ever experienced was a lack of IIS support, but I still managed to get that installed, even if it was a bit of a pain. Home is essentially the same as Pro. There shouldn't be any difference in terms of hardware compatibility/drivers. What was up with your copy PCGeek lol?!
You say it won't scan. Do you get one of those Windows Update cryptic error codes? And I'd follow Westy's advice regarding the audio drivers.

if your audio chip is onboard and you dont have any CD's, look up the exact audio chip model in your motherboard manual (or DL the manual) and get drivers from the net. If it is a card, you should be able to track down what it is from stuff written on the card. About windows updates.... I would think they only work after activation of windoze, or if you have a valid serial number if its a corporate copy. If thats all fine then it's beyond me... XP firewall is on by default with a fresh install though. I would think it would allow windows updates through though as a default setting.
