View Full Version : I need help !!
Im shocked im actually able to reach this site
Im having some major problems with my computer...keep in mind its a p3,very old and outdated ! but still.i try the restoration CD that came with, NOPE!!! all scratched up and wont work properly....so i install windows(98)over the current one thinking that would fix the problems. Didnt
So i delete and reinstall and GOD !! theres an error copying some files...i restart and it continues copying hardware....another error...display..control
Im thinking FUBAR!!!!!! ok so im thinking i have to format the HD ,reinstall windows..blah blah blah, by this time im ready to destroy the whole damn thing :/ i try this, restart and hold down the CTRL and hit safe mode command prompt only :enter: nothing ...no C:/ prompt
GGGRRRRRRRRRRRRRR now what??
i go to run...type in "format C:" click yes
No luck...says the format was aborted because another process was in use?
something like that.
Tell me what i should do...besides drag it to the curb
try to find a trial version of partition magic, using that you should have no problem formatting you pc
Im willing to try anything, i found partition magic 8.0 free trial version
The problem is im so unstable i end up closing everything and restarting..over and over and over
Again, im surprised im able to find any support online :(
Maybe someone could search out a DL of partition magic and post a link here?
Why cant i boot from CD-ROM??
Click Here and download the win98 boot disk. Then make a floppy with the file you download and you should be able to get into the command prompt and reformat, then you can use it to boot from the cd and reinstall

It sounds like you may have some kind of virus programm running , or it could be a good idea to make sure all the cables and plugs are all the way in , I have seen this on a friends sysytem and it was a simple matter of plugging the leads in again.;)

erm...try giving your comp a bath!! (NOT literally :p ...) but vacuum it and clean it out...replug everything in...and find out what kind of hard drive you use...cause you might need to replace it :(
apart from that...if you spent the time trying to fix it on a job...you'd probably have enough to get a new comp?! at anyrate..good luck with it... :D

Erm.... That too :D
Possibly a virus huh? could be. I couldnt download anything, nothing would respond.
I just kept reinstalling windows (2nd edition) 98 upgrade...registry cleaner...ect...
I did check the cables too :) The only problem i have now is the NVIDIA VANTA ...not working :(
I looked through best buy's sell ads, those Dell's are awfully cheap !
Im sick !! i payed a fortune for this gateway in '99 .......
Anyway..thanks you guys :)
Yeah i come back to it from time to time ...mess around with it
Heres what im getting currently
"Display adapter is not configured properly" cant figure that out.
Getting invalid page fault...fatal exception OE....Rundll32 caused a general protection fault....**** like that.
Other times everything seems to work fine..weird.
Definately trial and error for me :(
Do a google search for the drivers. I don't think the newest drivers on the nVidia site work with that old card...
I'll try that,thanks guy :)

Yes they do, the vndia drivers cover all the different models of graphics cards.
Terri, sometimes you need to use new ones, the old ones can look ok but still be faulty, I would also check your heatsink and more to the point the thermal grease on it . If the grease is the white stuff it can and does dry up after a while ;)
Do you think it could really be dust bunnies????? damn them!!!
What is a heatsink and will it damage my nails trying to find it?
Maybe i did something when i (tried)to install 98 2nd edition...98 upgrade? dont know.
In systems properties....NVIDIA-VANTA
(Gateway-English)
Divice status :
This device is either not present, not working properly or does not have all the drivers installed (code24)
try upgrading(again) the drivers...windows searches for best ones.....
...says im using the best driver for this device...what do i want to do??
...continue using the current one :/
Back to square 1.

What I like to do in a situation like that is pull every thing out of the case....then put it all back together and start it up with the Win98 boot disk in the floppy....FDISK and format the drive and start all over...
I pull every thing out and put it back in to make sure all of the hardware is seated good. Then I've found that the basic FDISK works wonders whith ****e drives.
GNX ,im not pulling anything out and replacing it :)
I cleaned the restore CD and got it working,i reinstalled the software and drivers....everything works except the display settings :(
Im a little unorganized so i cant find the boot disk i made but it looks like i'll be formatting and starting over.
Wish me luck?? :D
Thanks for all the help !
