View Full Version : The idea.
Ok... So here it is. On the side of my case I have an 80mm intake. I have started leaving it off because blowing the hot air from my room right into the HSF was raising the temp by 1-2 degrees. I was wondering if I were to take that intake out and make a duct to my 92mm Tornado on my HS... What would the effect be? Better cooling and noise reduction are my goal... What do you all think? Anyone know a thing or two about ducting? What are the perks, what are the disadvantages? Just an idea...

Well, ducting would still mean blowing air from your room right into the hsf. The only benefit would be that the hsf would get air directly from outside the case so that the air is not heated up by the warmer air inside the case. But there is nothing you can do if the air in your room is hot. Then you'd need to get an A/C and cool the air down. As for me, I have two intake fans on the window mod on the side of my case, but both fans are right next to the hsf and NB cooler. So they are pretty much blowing air directly onto the hsf and NB cooler. I get pretty much the same effect as ducting, but without the ducts.
See the thing is... Right now my 80mm fan blowing into the 92mm fan which is on the heatsink raises the temp. I turn off the 80mm fan and the temp drops. Im thinking about just removing the 80mm fan and ducting from the hsf to the window. Its a good 4 inches or so. I think Im gonna at least try it to see if the temps drop. If not, I might shift the window so the fan isnt right in front of the hsf but it can still blow air off the mobo.

Weird... I mean theoretically the coolest air is the air outside, so I don't understand why your temps would increase with the 80mm fan on. Well, try the duct and see if it helps. Let us know.
Right now Im in the process of considering playing with a TEC cooling unit :) I just found a nice little page where a guy goes through the steps of making one. Then I found a website where they actually make and sell them... couldnt find any prices though. Anyways... he got 1*C temps off the cool side... If you could duct that into your case... whew, temp drops :)
Ok... So now Im thinking Im just gonna duct to my HSF... I took the side off to do a little changing with the fan and I noticed a huge drop in my temp, so right now I guess its just lettin the hot air build up and thats all it has to pump into the cpu. With air comin from straight outside the case that might remove that problem (/crosses fingers) We'll see tomorrow when I go to buy my duct tubing and what not...

Good luck! :D
I think its because his 80mm cant push as many cfm's as his 92mm thats on the hsf so he's "choking" the 92mm
I think your right... I just added a cup with the bottom cut out to see how the duct idea would work... just that cup alone dropped my cpu temp by 2C!!! So... I went ahead and ordered a duct. Idle now at 38C load anywhere from 40 to 44 depending on what Im running... And to think... When I first built this machine I had that other crappy TT heatsink and I was seeing temps around 50C idle!!! Wow :)

PCGeek is right.
:D I love being right, and so smart :p
