When Im at my place which has a fairly cool computer room everything is ok for my overclocked barton. I did notice that when im lan'ing at a friends place I can barely stay above xp2600 speeds without the proc hitting 53C underload. This was unacceptable to me. Ive already done some homework and have determined I will be purchasing a Thermalright Sp-97 heatsink. The Thermalright website says my Abit NF7-S Rev2.0 doesnt need the Neo back-plate but I've read its required. Bending anything on the board is not an option for me. I contacted the company and ultimately they told me it was based on the company as to weather or not they would send my Sp-97 with the neo plate or not so my question is 2 fold.

Does anyone know of a specific reseller they can link me to online, that specifically states weather or not the sink theyre sending comes with the plate or not and finally, does anyone have a link to a match up between the 80 and 92mm tornado fans on this specific HS.

Noise is not an option considering the case im using now has 6x 80mm case fans (3 in 3 out stock configuration), and a dual fan powersupply, its already fairly noisy.

I have both the SP97 and NFS7 Rev2 like you :) Neo backplate is not required... I thought it was so I ordered one the day after the HS came in... it's actually still in the shipping package haha. If you want the backplate let me know and Ill hook you up at discount price... But you most likely will be able to get the HS to fit correctly without it. Good luck... and hope you dont mind the noise!

Uh... what exactly do you mean by a match up? If your wondering if either 80mm or 92mm tornados will fit the answer is yes :) The clips work very well too.

i meant in terms of temps. Im just debating if the temps are worth the increased cost and noise level.

I was considering rheostating the tornado but then I thought, knowing my luck, it will somehow get set to the off position either by a dumb friend, or just freak accident.

Did you end up putting any kind of rheo or speed limiter on your tornado?

I dont have my hsf (92mm tornado) on any type of control, I just leave it runnin at its own speed. Before I had a thermaltake silentboost or somethin like that... and at 2400mhz I was about 49idle 55under load. Now with the sp97 and tornado im at 2600mhz at 38-40 idle (depending on my room temps) and 45 under load. So as you can see, a huge performance increase.

theres a difference between fairly noisy and a tornado... :(

I'm running a 92mm Tornado on top of a SLK-947U and running it through a Thermaltake HardCano 9 fan controller..... Only problem I have is that if you cold boot the machine you have to crank it almost all the way up for it to start spinning the fan..... I run it at about 3000 RPM, which I found to be about the best compromise between noise and cooling.... I only get about 1 or 2 degrees better with it wide open.

The Vantec Nexus is the best controller to have with a Tornado....cause it was made for that fan...it does not go below 7v so it is safe for the CPU and 7v is enough to start it up on boot. I have it and HIGHLY recomend it.

Do the temps from the 80 to 92mm versions justify the downfalls? (Price, noise, etc)

I believe the 92mm Tornado is only 1dB louder on high than the 80mm one. The CFM is far and away more.

yea the tornado is loud, but you get used to it, the temps drop alot though, i usually run it at 4000rpm. i have the 947u and a 92mm tornado

I like mine now that Ive gotten used to it... my room is SO quiet without it! I cant sleep a wink... bleh. But with it :) Oh so nice, drowns out all the noise from my roomates...
