I read a post recently that basically said that LCD monitors were terrible. terrible, as in, the worst. i was under the impression that they were the best???

why are LCD monitors so bad...also, what are the best types of monitors to buy?

any help with this topic will be greatly appreciated...

It depends what you want. LCD's are good if you need desk space and they have some pretty sharp images and colors. But for video and gaming a CRT is the best, because an LCD will be too slow and will cause ghosting. If you want and LCD get the fastest you can, aka the lowest response time. 16ms or 12ms is preferable

I still don't get the point of an LCD, they're just bad... it's not like the space they save is worth $500 more even when they're not good enough for games. CRT > LCD.

It's not that lcd's are bad they are just a lot of $$ for a good one. You can get a crt for much less.

I have a 19" Samsung SyncMaster LCD flat panel and it's the best monitor I've ever owned. I'd never go back to a CRT. LCDs give sharp pictures with great color. The only downside (besides being more expensive, but LCDs are getting cheaper all the time) is that they have a slower response time (it's because of the way LCDs work) than CRTs. But with the new generation of LCDs with 12ms response times, the difference between LCDs and CRTs are narrowing even more.

i always thought LCD would be best for gaming and video, but then again i never thought anything else had a better response time either... i learned something new... :D

by the way, my name is matt and i'm new here. over the past 3 months or so, i've peaked an interest in computers, expanding on what i knew already... definently more than the average person tho. i was told to join the forum because i would learn a lot. i really want to devote the time to gaining some knowledge in these areas. wish me luck!!!

Hi quikayce. Welcome to PCStats! Even by just browsing the forums you can learn a great deal, but we're always happy to answer any questions. Good luck!

TBH, I absolutely *LOVE* my 17" LCD with a passion. I will never ever buy another CRT. If you gave me one, I'd sell it. Simple as that. They are clear, vivid, the response time on any half decent LCD is fine for movies, games... anything you want to throw at it. The contrast difference actually gives me a great advantage in dark games - just sit up in your seat and suddenly you have light ;). The thin LCDs are fabulous - it actually feels much nicer than a large oversized CRT IMHO. They take up leess desk space, look spectacular AND you don't have to put up with that *awful* 60Hz refresh that you get on CRTs when you've just installed an OS but haven't put your gfx drivers on it yet. Small advantage you may think, but I find it a great help! Yes, I know, LCDs are 60Hz, but they don't hurt your eyes in the same way CRTs do. Yes, another advantage - LCDs are better for your eyesight.

The two disadvantages I see in LCDs:

1) 1 set resolution - with LCDs, they are designed to run at one single resolution. At other resolutions, images and text look awful. This means if you have an LCD designed to run at 1280x1024, you really need to be running that in games (need a hefty graphics card), but more importantly you need to be running that on the desktop. This is where you notice it the more because the text looks awful otherwise. Therefore, if you find 1280x1024 too small for a TRUE 17" (~19" CRT - just less than), then maybe look at an 18" LCD. Personally I find 1280x1024 fine for a 17" LCD.

2) Dead pixels. I had one in the middle of my LCD initially, but it has since gone away and never reappeared. But just remember - at least in the UK, you can return a product after 28 days under the buyer protection thingy, so regardless of manufacturer guarantee you have some leeway to return a product.

I don't mention price as a disadvantage because I personally think LCDs are worth every penny. CRTs? Old tech. 20th century. Get with the times ;)

Can you sell me one? A good one like an NEC, Sony, or Viewsonic? Please? I'll take it!

But always remember: CRT's are the ownage, and LCD's aren't. :p

lcd's are the pwnage, especially the 16ms and down, they have better contrast, are thin, good inuff response time nowadays so match crt's, consume less power, and dead pixels are slowly becomming nonexistand as the technology progresses, crt's are like non hdtv's, get with the times, or stick with your crt if you like, but then you'll end up like those geeks who go "my 46" diskette owns your dvd"

*oh and ignoring my dissiong of the crt's, i would recommend a 19" viewsonic flat screen crt, or some kind of 17" 12-16 ms 400+ contrast ratio with dvi in lcd, also go to newegg.com and check some reviews on the lcd's, that way you can pick out the best, and the one that has the best most ppl to no dead pixel ratio :D (and yes i know right now crt's are good, but ur going down foo, ur loosing the war ;) )

I find the only LCD haters are the ones who never used them or the ones who bought a crappy one.

I have a Sceptre 17" LCD and have been soooooo impressed by it. It takes up half the space, and combined with my 9800 pro gives off a clearer image when i watch DVDS than my TV would.

CRT monitors gave me a headache after being on them, the LCD is a bit easier on the eyes.

i'll never go back to CRT its like going from budweiser to odouls, you just don't. take our advice.

We are opposites, I guess. I have used several LCDs and I hate them. They weren't "crappy" either. LCDs give me headaches with their huge pixels. I can play BHD for 10 hours STRAIGHT without feeling a thing! (I didn't even go piss during this becuase I was on a roll!) :D

Hello, everyone! I'm new here. I've learned so much just reading on here the last 2 days. I need some help...I think I made a bad purchase. I bought a nVIDIA 6200oc 256 MB video card the other day. I have yet to find a good review on it. It was 149.99, I think. I had a $40 gift card, so it only cost me 110. I got it because I bought Far Cry for my PC. I have a 17 inch CRT and the game looks awesome!!! But I read that LCD's are bad for games...is that true?? I'm lost!! I was going to go to TIger Direct.com and buy a 19" LCD, 12ms, 1280X1084 @ 80hz. $200 after rebates. SHould I get this or stick with what I have. I have a cheap MAG Innovision 17" lol, but it still works good. HELP!! Did I get a bad video card??? Should I get an LCD??

I'd get an LCD if I could afford one. The two main disadvantages to them is that it looks like crap if you don't run in the native resolution (Ace already mentioned this), and that white haze at certain angles.

In the computer labs at college, they have Dell Ultrasharp 1704FPT 17" LCDs (http://accessories.us.dell.com/sna/ProductDetail.aspx?c=us&l=en&cs=19&sku=320-3952&category_id=4009), and I really like them. If I got an LCD though, I'd keep a CRT for gaming (since I don't game on 1280x1024) and anything that requires something other than the native res.

My $0.02USD. :D
