Hey guys first post and first home built pc.
Okay, I installed the mobo, ram, and cpu/heatsink already.
I've plugged in the power cords and stuff, except for the fans.
I'm using an ABIT AN7 mobo and AMD Athlon XP 2600+.
I turn on the power then press the power button and it goes
"EEEUNNEEEUNNEEEUNEEEEUNN" Then repeats itself over and over and over until I turn it off. I have the powerswitch in the back when I turn that on its fine, but when I turn on the power from the front it starts making that noise. I have no clue what is wrong. my RAM is pressed in and tightly secured.
So what may cause this problem!?

Does it sound like a siren coming from the motherboard?

it sounds like a siren yeah, i unplugged my cpu's fan from the little thing. then i got close to my psu and i think thats what is making the noise. however, I may be wrong.

From what Ive been reading there are a few possible problems. The AN7 board is extremely picky with ram, so I dunno if you're also having stability problems but that could be something going on. You need to have a fan plugged into the CPU fan connector on your motherboard or you'll get that siren noise too, if it is coming from the motherboard speaker. Ill keep lookin around.

Also check your temps... if it is a siren it may mean your cpu is overheating and youll want to reseat your heatsink.

took me about two hours to install the heatsink. that thing didn't want to go down. to plug it in on the other side. bleh

What heatsink?

Mokkan

The stock one that came with it.
I was going to order the AMD 64 3000+.
So I ordered Cooler Master VORTEX DREAM CPU Cooler.
Then I took off the 3000+ and forgot to take off that heatsink/fan.
So, I'm currently using the stock one that came with the 2600+.

OKay, I re-installed everything. Except for the motherboard and the cpu. I don't want to turn it on and see if it'll work right now until I can figure out whats making this noise. Because I'm afraid that I'll fry the mobo and the cpu.

I think I found my problem. My friend and I were thinking for like half hour. Then hes like put fresh greese on it. I'm like uh..well there was clay on it before i took it off since the video said so, then he told me it should've been on there. thats my prob maybe. thanks for your help! I'll post again if thats not the problem.

oh god no, its friday, well technically its saturday btu that doesnt matter, nono no i sugest you just wait it out, compusa has the sh1ttiest crap and its way over priced, just wait for newegg, if you order it on sat or sun, they will verify your adtress and ship it on monday, that way you'll have it by tuesday morning (2-nd day shipping most likely not required) as for buying crap from compusa, an 120 mm fan is as far as i'm gonna go, but then again circuit city and best buy have them 2 ;)

I went to compusa, and holy **** it was expensive.
Artic Silver Thermal paste > 12.99
New heatsink and fan > 19.99 when it said 13.99
Total: 35.87
New egg price would be like what 20>25 dollars.

well, i just put in the same heatsink, since the one I bought was being gay lol.
It was the cpu, because my video card and my ram are plugged in and stuff, and i tried them unplugged. thank god my cpu isn't fried. I'm wiring the fans right now, then going to boot up the bios, then install SuSE linux for right now, wish me luck..

okay, the cpu isn't the problem, it's the video card...I have no clue why its making that noise. it sounds different than last night. it works fine with the ram and cpu but not the videocard, ram, and cpu.

That's just weird, it's obviously the fan, as nothing else could make a siren noise... I dunno though.

Mokkan

Yeah, its one long continous noise. when i the video card wasn't plugged in it worked fine, but when it was it made the siren.
