Greetings,
Whan I had my system upgraded in December I moved from NT 4 to XP. The "tech" installed/dumped XP and something like fifty other titles/garbage he likes on my system - none of which I wanted, and some would not even work on XP. (Enough - my next system I will build myself.) I have done as much housecleaning as I can but am pretty clear I need to reinstall XP. I am considering installing the OS on one 10GB partition (C) creating a 2GB partition for the paging file (D) and then installing all the applications/software I want (20-25 programs total) on another/the next 10BG partition (E) - I have lots of storage space. When I told this "tech" about problems I have had with the system, and what I intended to do with a reinstallation of the OS, he told me to install software and the OS on different partitions was a "very bad idea" as MS Office and a number of other applications did not like that arrangement. Is this true? Any opinions/insight are most welcome - thanks.

well its not such a great idea...i did that once...not worth the trouble...its better to keep everything on one partion...and make a smaller one to save files to so that you wont have to burn everything on cd when you reformatt again..

Thanks for the reply. While it seems like a good idea to me to put the OS/paging file/applications on different partitions I have begun that process as an experiment and however specific I am with where things are supposed to be installed, I am constantly fighting "defaults" and something gets written to the C partition, in "common files" or elsewhere. There areunavoidable (by me anyway) conflicts and I generally seem to be fighting an uphill battle... as you said - not worth the effort. Thanks again.

I have been running with my os (win XP pro) on 1 partition all the programs and my documents on a nother partition, this way if I get a Virus or Unrecoverable error it is usually on the OS's partition, so I am able to recover any program data when I re-install or repair windows. The "fighting Defaults" as Bangalore puts it is, is fairly easily overcome using windows TweakUi available from microsoft (just google search it) you are able to change the location of default locations of most store directoried from program files to where your stored cd images are kept. This is a very easy process that only takes a few minutes of your time

This is the way I manage my harddisk space as well. Windows and Programs go on one partition (C), And I have a Data Drive (D) where I store all my music/movies/apps so that if I do reformat the drive, I don't lose any of the personal data. I take that even a step further by backing up my D: Drive onto my Backup (B:) drive on a file server.
