View Full Version : Amd 64 and PCI express
Hey I've been looking into buying a new computer and I'd like to build it myself but I'm having problems finding a motherboard that I would like. so I'm wondering if there are any motherboards out there that support the amd 64's with pci express because I've tried searches, on this site and other search engines and really haven't found anything that has been remotely helpful. So I decided I would post here and see if their are processors that exist of this nature or if they just haven't come out, I mean yeah 8x agp is still a viable option as their are some very good high end graphics cards that I can buy for under $200 CDN. However so that I don't have to upgrade stuff in a year and have a good system for the next 2 or more years I'd prefer to get pci express. Anyways any help anyone could give me such as a motherboard name, or possibly a link to a site with some better details about the motherboard and maybe even a price would be very helpful. Again thanks for reading this I hope I didn't ramble too much, and again any input would be helpful considering I can't seem to find anything about these two products co-existing.

Hey todd
im pretty sure that there arent any AMD/PCI-E motherboards yet, i you want pci-e you'll have to go intel, otherwise youll have to wait, since such a board i dont think exists yet

The first Athlon 64 PCIe chipset will the the nForce 4. It should debut very late in the year this year, or the the first couple weeks in January.

The best OS for an Athlon64 would be Windows XP 64-bit edition which should be released pretty soon. That way you'll be able to utilize the processor's 64-bitness to the maximum.
wow this forum is soo similar to the WN forum it's eeery, does WNxOrb work for you guys ???? lol, anyways umm thanks for the response I guess I was just looking for conformation on the motherboard not existing. I think I can wait, but I dunno if my sister would want to and I can imagine the price of the first mobo with PCIe and AMD 64 is going to cost quite a bit, so I think I can go with the amd 64 and a good mobo then upgrade later and get a PCIe graphics card once the initial ones prices drop. Thanks again for the help guys :) I think I'll make sure I get a 450W power supply incase I need it.

I'm pretty sure prices won't exceed $150. AMD motherboards have generally been pretty affordable especially compared to Intel motherboards. I think that when Canterwood came out, motherboards were hovering around $200  As for the power supply, don't worry so much about the wattage as you should the quality. I highly recommend the OCZ Powerstream and so does every review of it.
