hello again, folks. can someone kindly explain to me why it takes such a long time for my system to download clips, such as movie trailers?
i have a 2.66 - p4, with 640 RAM, 2/3rds of which is currently unused. i have a very low page file usage, very low CPU usage, and it still takes my machine 10 minutes to download a movie trailer???
i use a wireless internet connection, that fluctuates between "very good" and "excellent".?
i'm baffled. any help/advice would be greatly appreciated...
uh, you need a better connection, how good your computer is has nothing to do with how fast it can download information off the ineternet

how is this possible, if my connection is always somewhere between "very good" and "excellent"?
thanks again for the time...

Take one of the speed tests at the following location:
http://www.dslreports.com/stest
Choose a server that isn't listed as "(Very Busy)". Post your results here.

RESULT OF SPEED TEST...
2004-09-02 23:19:49 EST: 128 / 905
Your download speed : 131289 bps, or 128 kbps.
A 16 KB/sec transfer rate.
Your upload speed is much faster than down.. have you tweaked?
Your upload speed : 926893 bps, or 905 kbps.
Why is my download speed so much less than my upload speed? It's basically at dial-up speed. it didn't always used to be like this. i used to be able to play clips very fast? I haven't tweaked? Perhaps unwittingly?

Hey all. I was able to fix the problem with help from our brothers at Broadband Reports.com forum (Linksys). I thank Shiznit for putting me on this trail...
Anyway, per advice from people on the forum, I accessed my router setup page, using my IP address. On the wireless tab, it was suggested that the channel was probably set to "6" for default. it was suggested that I change the channel to 1, or 11. I changed it to "1", and i'm flying. Simple quick fix. See new transfer rates below!

Your download speed : 1515353 bps, or 1479 kbps.
A 184.9 KB/sec transfer rate.
Your upload speed : 923822 bps, or 902 kbps.
Couldn't have done it without Shiznit. You da Shiznit!
Glad u solved it. Who's ur ISP???

I'm using Mozilla. It uses tabbed browsing, intuitive menu's, ad blocking - etc. a very nice experience...

Mozilla is your web browser (I use Firefox myself). PCgeek is asking about your Internet Service Provider (ISP). Mine is Roadrunner Cable.

Whenever you send a file somewhere you are uploading. Its just the opposite of downloading.
My ISP caps the upload because they dont want everyone running file servers and taking all the bandwidth.... i guess.
I use opt online too. They don't want use running servers of any kind but they give you a 900 Kb/s upload... How retarded is that?
Oh an Chachabah, something is still wrong. The slowest you should be getting on optonline should be 4000 Kb/s DL, 800Kb/s UL. I get 5000/900, my friend gets 10000/1000... so something is definitelly wrong...

PCgeek is saying the slowest service you can buy from your ISP is 4000/800. you are getting 1500/900. Did you run the speedtests with all other net activity suspended? ie no running downloads ..? satellite service has good bandwidth, but the ping time is very high compared to DSL or cable due to the packets being sent to space and back. It might be a problem with your Rwin window being set too low. Go back to DSLreports and check out Dr. TCP and set Rwin the highest it can go (65535 i think)
