I have a (I think) Enermax power supply in one of my computers, and it gets really hot, to the point that I super-glued a 80mm fan onto one end of it, but it still runs alot hotter then any of my others.

This computer also has problems with the heat (with the case on the case temp is around 100).

Its a AthlonXP 2400+ on a mATX board, so the only cards I have in there are two paralell port cards and a NIC.

But I can't afford one over $50.

the Antec TRUE380 380watt PSU should be great for u...though it is over your budget slightly...the Antec TRUE330 is also good...just 50 watts less and exactly @ your budget without any shipping...

www.newegg.com

def. go with a reliable brand like Antec, Enermax (yes again), or Aspire (PCGeek14's number 1 choice)

Having a warm PSU has not real affect on your case temps. Air only goes out of a PSU through the exhast...not into your case. How many case fans do you have?

1 intake, 1 exhaust, and 2 on the PSU, all 80mm.
Its a generic mid-tower case, with only room for the fans I have in there.
If switching the power supply doesn't lower the temps that much, I'll just cut a blowhole into the top of the case.

With the case on, the power supply heats up the top half of the case, much past the heat the cases are normaly.

That could also be because of my AthlonXP 2400+ running at 131-145F.
I have a Foxcon heatsink and fan that came with the processor, which I want to change but don't know what to use because the processor is right under the power supply.
Any suggestions?

Ouch, yeah get a new heatsink... How much you lookin to drop on one before I suggest the SP97 (if its still available...)

The Vantec Aeroflow (http://www.newegg.com/app/viewProductdesc.asp?description=35-110-007&depa=0) has always been a great solution for the Athlon XP. It performs extremely well for the price.

Thats what I was thinking of getting, I had the socket 478 version it worked better then anything else I had.

Thanks for the help.

have you ever tried giving it a clean out :)

I can only imagine this fan must be on the oposite end of the PSU to the exhaust fan that blows out the back. To be honest I don't know if that fan is actually doing any good where it is... It's probobly too close to the other fan and so is causing turbulance and could even be disrupting the airflow the other fan was creating. You'd be better off using that 80mm fan for the blowhole you are talking about and getting a better heatsink on the CPU.

Yes, I recently blew everything in there with a compressed air.
The fan I put on the power supply helped lower the heat of it, but just barely.

Just a thought, but did you make sure to attach the fan facing the right direction (i.e. you're not blowing air back into the PSU)?

get a Vantec Aeroflow if u can handle the noise

The computer is plently noisy enough, so I don't think it would make much of a difference.

But I'm going to put the blowhole in later today, and I'll see if that lowers the temps enough.

You must be frikin kidding. The Aeroflow is only rated at 38dB. I have an 80mm Vantec Tornado (55.2dB) and I think it's pretty silent.

Freakker, if you still want a really cool PSU in the future, take a look at PC Power & Cooling (http://www.pcpowerandcooling.com) PSUs. They are probably the coolest PSUs available. They make the highest quality PSUs and they just distanced themselves even further from the competition with the new Turbo-cool 510 Express ($210 MSRP).

haha tornados are loud, but im already used to it

I switched the the Enermax with a Linkworld I had laying around, and the case temps lowered 10-20F, without the blowhole.

Tommarow I should get the Aeroflow, and hopefully I'll learn how to cut a blowhole with a drill, saws-all(I think thats the name), and a dry wall saw with a metal blade.
I really need a dremel.

hole saw works great

WHAT?? You took out an Enermax PSU and switched it for some other crap? Enermax is one of the top makers of PSUs

just remember to remove all the crap inside your case before cutting. Metal shavings on computer components = bad. =)

That may be, but the one I had for some reason ran alot hotter if it was horizontal insted of vertical, go figure.

But now I have a serious problem.
I want to buy an Aeroflow, but they didn't have one so I bought the Aeroflow 2, since in all the review I read the Aeroflow 2 was only 1 degree or so hotter then the original.
But now, according to the bios and MBM5, the cpu is idle at 160F, and it doesn't take my thinking to know that that is dangerously hot.

I put a rice sized piece of thermal grease in the middle of the core(which is what Artic Silver's instructions say to do, but I didn't use artic silver), and since both sides of the heat sink have the same ridge, you can't but it on backwards.

EDIT: Okay, I just have a moddy cpu/cpu socket.
I moved the heat sink, temps went down to 116, I put the power suppy back in, temps went to 120 in bios, I move the heatsink again but I couldn't get below 120 in the bios, so I boot into windows and I get 130, which is still better then the 140+ I used to get, I'll try moving it again tommarow.

Thanks for everyone's help and opinions on products.
