looking to buy an athlon64 processor, but I don't want to spend the money to get the 939 chipset because it appears to cost a lot more. I am therefore reduced to a socket 754 chipset and I have to buy a motherboard. Does anyone know what the best socket 754 motherboard is? Preferably I'd like 4 dimm slots, but after reading review after review, athlon64 boards don't appear to have 4 dimm slots on the motherboards. I also have an nVidia graphics card, so I don't know if using the nForce3 chipset is more advantageous to me opposed to another.

The whole process is a mess as I like Pentium processors better, but I understand I'll get more gaming performance out of an athlon64. If I am going to go socket 754 w/ athlon64 proc would it just be more worth my money to go p4 prescott since I am not buying a high end athlon64 processor? In the end I want to spend approx. $200 on a proc, and $200 or less on a motherboard.

A64 3200, DFi Lanparty Nforce3 250gb look in the other threads its mentioned. and prescotts are some sucky hot processors.

MSI has had a pretty noticable lead in Athlon64 board performance. The K8 NEO-FSR or K8 Neo Platinum would both be good choices depening on what sort of features you are after. The nForce3-250GB chipset in the way to go though, much faster than VIAs.

right now the best mobo i've read reviews on is the DFI UT 250gb that will go on sale this month. it can handle DDR616 and utilizes all of the nforce3 goodies.

i have the msi K8 Neo Platinum, all i'm gonna say is it runs nice, but is full of bugs that are slowly being worked out on the msi forum and with updates from msi.
