Since im about to get a Newcastle Athlon 64 3200+ i wanna OC it, and i dont want it running a 60C with the stupid stock heatsink, like my current crap tank does. So i was wondering, whats the best heatsink/fan combo for an Athlon 64 3200+
Ill prolly change this later....but for now, im going with air cooling :D
(WATCH OUT BABY!! WHEN I WIN THE LOTTO, IM GETTING A PROMETIA MACH 2!!)
anything from Thermalright is good...just slap a tornado on one of those bad boys and ur good....
PS...to my knowledge...they dont make the Prometia anymore...rofl :D

The A64s run at lower voltages, meaning they do not run that hot. You can easily oc them with a stock heatsink and not going close to 60C. But if you want ultimate cooling id suggest going for the XP-120 from thermalright, stock fits a 120mm fan with some nice cfm you can do alot of cooling with it
what fan would you recommend to put on top of the xp-120?
Im wondering if it will fit in my antec value case on the NForce 4 whenever it's released...

ok ill get the xp-120 does any1 know if that thing'll fit right on a DFI UT Lanparty mobo?? Also whats a good 120mm fan to get?? (if theres anything better than a tornado, and less.....whats the word.....EAR DEAFENING!! that would be good)

Tornado would be a bad choice for this heatsink since it can support a 120mm far, meaning that a 120mm fan pushing the same cfm as a tornado would be quiter because it spins slower. just look around for something with high cfm and moderate DB (around 40 max). To your second question, yes it will fit the DFI board, it has been tested by thermalright themselves

hmm...i dont know if i would suggest the xp120 unless you are willing to deal with the noise...because if you put a slow fan on it...you might as well as get a zalman 7000a-cu and save a few bucks...
i think the best thing to do is get the xp120 with a fast+loud fan like the Panaflo 120mm 'ULTRA' 115cfm 45.5dba U1A Case Fan and put it on a good fan controller ie. a vantec one...so you can crank it up when you need cool temps or crank it down if you want to sleep

whats that noise compared to a 120mm tornado??

there is no 120mm tornado

45.5 dba is a little quieter than the 92mm tornado...but not by much...so a you would probably need a fan controller if thats what you want to get...

i'm running the heatsink fan combo made by cooler master for the 754 socket. I must say though that it is very loud. And i'm not shur that it's cooling any better then the stock heat sink.

hey geedy have you posted any benchmarks?

what version? the hyper 6 or what? curious cause october 8th i'll be getting all the components for my 64bit rig. post some temps with that cpu overclocked.

Im running a stock heatsink on the A64 3000+ (10x215) and the MSI Neo Platinum board and my temps are in the mid 30s to 40s max. If you would get the xp 120 you really dont need such a powerful fan, something that pushes around like 70-80 cfm would do the job just great and would be much less noisy.

lol..if you dont get a powerful fan then you might as well get the zalman 7000a-cu...save a even more...and get about the same temps..

What do you save? $10? with the xp120 you atleast have the ability to upgrade fans to a more powerful one,
you'll save more than $10 if you factor in the cost of the fan to go on top of that xp120 compared to the zalman which has its own fan
also, how does a 92mm tornado fit on an xp120?? i thought the xp120 was for 120mm fans (hence the '120' in the name). I've never seen either before so I dont know how it works.

All thermalright heatsinks come with clips for different size fans ranging from 80mm to 120mm for this heatsink, therefore you can pretty much use any fan on the xp-120

man..i still dunno why no one tried a 92mm tornado on the zalman 7000a-cu yet...i wanna see how it does lol...

Something about the XP-120 and the fact that it costs so much, but uses Aluminum fins just bothers me. I just ordered the CNPS7000A-Cu. Great performance, all copper, and quiet! Nothing beats quiet.

The xp 120 doesnt cost that much, just like any other thermalright heatsink its about $40-$50 online

u people gotta look stuff up b4 posting... If people actually looked stuff up before they asked a question here, there would be no point in having a forum ;) I must admit, sometimes it's easier just to ask here than go look it up...I know I've done it :p
