I've been using Asus Probe (Ass probe lol) for awhile and am wondering if I can trust it. If not, is there a downloadable thermometer that Is trustworthy?

motherboard monitor 5
well...all of those programs use the motherboard temperature sensor to give off temperature readings...usually they are wayyy off (but a BIOS upgrade will fix it)...so i think no matter what u use...it will be the same...MBM5, Everest, Winbond...etc.
on my Abit NF7-S...all programs that i have, motherboard monitor 5, Abit EQ, Everest Home Edition, the BIOS, all read the same...but i have a temperature monitor in my case which is alwayys a few degrees cooler...so i think that proves that BIOS temps are off

it depends where that temperature monitor is placed...if it isnt in the same place as the motherboard sensor..then you cant expect the same temps...

Ok. I got Motherboard Monitor 5 and it got the same temps as Ass Probe.
Oh well. I'll just have to stick with the Ass Probe(ing) :D

you can buy both one of those 5-1/4 panels which have their own probes you can place where you like
but their quality is pretty close to the ones motherboards comes with already
or you can buy a real digital Thermometer

like this it's likely of a much better quality then those small condensator probes
of cause it's more of a tool you do tests with not something you place inside the case all the time

the software is only as accurate as the hardware it reads the temps from.
On a more interesting note, I came across an article once that compared the temps measured off an Asus P4C800-E and a Abit IC7 Max. In the experiment they used the same hard ware, cooler, and most importantly, the same cpu on both machines.
What they found is that comparing temps between motherboards is basically futile, even with regards to the P4 chips which get thier temps from within the core. The reason being is that the temps the CPU provides arent in actual temp numbers but something closer to numerical variables. Its the duty of the motherboard to plug in all the variables into an equation and calculate the temp at any given time. Well, since there is no "set in stone" standard for the equation to use motherboard makers are left to thier own accord as to what algorithm to use when determining the temps.
Essentially you can take the same chip, drop it on 2 different boards with the same cooling setup, and get temps that are completely different of each other.
I was worried that my Hardware moniter that came with my NF7-S was unreliable and asked much as you did if I should switch to something else or download the newest version. In the end, if your unsure as to weather or not your board is cheating you with temps, find someone who is using the same HSF, case cooling, and motherboard (this one is most important) as you and compare your temps to what they are getting.
Hope some of this will help you in finding the truth.

Could be any number of things. Im assuming your bay cooler is reading your ambient temps slightly lower than your boards temp reader. But I pose the following question:
Is your bay probe mounted in exactly the same place or extremely close to where your mobo picks up the ambient temps from?
After reading all the stuff I have about temp monitering im getting the feeling that the only good way to read temps is with one of those professional grade thermal gauges. Like these:

Sadistic wonderful posts my friend.
He pretty much summed up things, if you do decide to get a real digital thermometer go with a Fluke. :D They're the best $$$ can buy!
my temp reader is basically right in the middle under my CPU...the sweet spot i think...they cant be wrong
dont waste money on those expensive things!...temps arernt that important...if they are within the limin <55...no worries :)
