RAID, and SATA,?????

Hey all,i have a couple of questions for things i have no clue about. can someone explain what RAID is, and Does,,,,,i know it stands for Rapid array inexpensive disks, or something. Anyways, also SATA. Also if you think of some other abbreviations, please tell all....

Raid has alot of diff modes. Some are used for diff things but the easiest 2 to remember are striping and mirroring.

You can raid with 2 non identical sized drives but your total space is determined by the smaller of the 2.

In raid 0 (striping) the data is stripped between 2 drives meaning a portion is written to both drives at the same time. In doing this it increases your write speeds dramatically.

If a stripped drive becomes hosed, you loose your data.

Mirroring basically writes a copy of whatever your saving to the other hard drive. Its good if your worried about loosing data. If one drive fails you still have the other.

There are ways of mixing and matching different features but that is for another time...
