I'm starting to play the drums and now want my own set, but not sure which one to get. My price range will be $1k-1,500. Which is better, maple or birch? Also, i'm thinking of going electric over the conventional set. Just to control the noise, ehehe! While any pointers, recommendations, and advice will be much appreciated! Thanks in advance! :D

you got one right here! I have been drumming for over a year now (started September of last year).
We'll I play on a $600 set of CB drums, they are a low-budget set, but hey I love em to death and it was never my intention to play on a $1500+ Pearl kit, because really the drum kit will not make the drummer, the drummer makes the drummer.
And honestly I'd have to say while picking out a kit, keep that in mind. Just because you play on a $1500 Pearl set won't make you any better than somebody playing on a $500 set of a unknown company.

Since your just starting out I would not recommend buying a very expensive kit. A lot of guys spend big bucks on getting big sets (im taking about like 10 peice drum sets) when really if your just starting out, you are fine with a 5 peice set, because your just starting out and you need to learn the basics first, not try to use everything at once.

I would suggest something like http://www.ludwig-drums.com/content/products/maple/l8325em.php
I'd recommend some specific kits, but I am busy right now, later i shall if youd like.

Another thing, go to your local music store and talk to them, they'll be able to give you some ideas on what you want depending on what music your into.

for every 10 guitarists there is 1 drummer lol, thats a good old saying. In my school there are like now 6 drummers including me, most of them are just starting out and there was a drum rehersal thing for the school band, and bahaha I took it with GLORY and than said that i didnt want to do band

I understand what you're trying to say polykranopalous, ahah (long name) eh. Anyhow, it's not that i'm trying to get the badass drum set so ppl can *think* i'm a pro drummer... it's just that I wanna make sure I get a set I can keep playing with for like... forever? ahah. Birch and Maple sets make wayyy better sounds than the wooden based sets, thats why they cost a lot more. I've been drumming for about a month now and I think I have all the basics down. I have to give myself some props cuz I didn't get any help whatsoever, eh. I'm definitely going to start with a 5-piece set and thats w/o a doubt, LoL. When I said 1k to 1,500, I still meant a 5 piece set, eh. Yeah i've come across the ones with like 2 base and 2 snares, etc.. but thats not going to be me for about another decade, lmao. Oh and the electric one i was thinking of getting is Roland's TD-6S V-Tour set w/ upgraded module and stuff. It has gotten high ratings from customers who've purchased it. The one thing i really find electric sets soooo awesome is that you can play anytime of the day!! I'm talking like 2am in the morn, but just have the sound low or wear a headset!! Not to mention how good they sound, in terms of realism that is, ahaha. I've played on a 5k electric drumset at samash the other day... another roland product... omg, it's off the hook! But too much $$$$, lmao! Anyways, I'm definitely going to talk to some of the drum reps at guitar center and samash. Btw poly, I get like the wholesale price cuz I know this producer who buys from these stores like there is no tomorrow, ahaha. So if there was a product for 3k, i'd get it around 1,500ish ;)

yeah but definitely get back to me and let me know what u think is a good set if you'd like, eh. Maybe we can share demos later on, ahah

I have drummed for almost 10yrs and have owned many sets. My favorite was the Tama rockster 10piece I had with Gibraltor Double pedals, and Zildjan cymbols. 1st I would ask what type of music do you primarily want to play. I would also recommend to learn on an trap set(5piece acoustic) over a electric drum set. You can control the sound on an acoustic set with head pads. Have you checked out musiciansfriend.com. Prices are decent but alot of options.

I really just started listening/playing Lamb of God. My favorite song to drum of theirs is The Faded Line off of Ashes of the Wake. I just love showing off with that song!!

If you can afford it, I would go with a TAMA Rockstar or a Starclass Mapple. I own a 7 Piece TAMA Rockstar and it is amazing. My friend has a Starclassic Maple, and the sound and quality is incredible.

I've always felt and experience that TAMA is the best way to go when it comes to drums.

Damn straight flippy2k!! Tama has always given me what I want in sound quality and reliability. The 5 piece Rockstar set really isn't that expensive either
