Hello,
Anyone know of any software that allows ripping audio from CDs recorded in DTS? I have an audio CD that I bought in the 1980's (post 1985 bur prior to 1990 - I have been buying CDs since 1984 starting in Germany. They cost about 15USD equivalent at the time) and tried to rip it into MP3 format to load onto my Creative Labs Zen Xtra. The Creative Labs software could not rip it because it is in DTS. Thanks!

try cdex it's freem and rip directly to mp3 and wma and ...........
on the fly
often when you use software for a device where the ripping comes free with the control software you get what you pay for :P
so it's good that you can get a standalone ripper for free without getting what you pay for if that makes any sense whatsoever :P

i've always had good luck with AudioGrabber 1.83. it's freeware and doesn't require a PW or registration. you will need to get the LAME codec which is underneath the list of mirrors for the prog itself. Extract the .dll that's inside the ZIP right into the same directory as the program is installed in, and you can rip all the way up to 320kbps. I love that prog. I tell mine to rip directly to MP3 without going to WAV first, and it goes along at 16x the whole way through...and you get to put whatever you want in the ID3 tags..

DTS is a 5.1 sound effect for movies and DVD films and so on.. I doubt very much that a CD is in that format..
For ripping my music CD's I use Media Player 10 (9 will do) as it gives the names and everything else that you need when you rip the CD.. Its rather handy for lazy people (thats me!!!) and its easy to do :)

phill9800,
The message that appears when attempting to rip "Quadrophenia" by The Who, says it is DTS.

It is a 2-disc CD bought in Germany in the 1980's (later part). DVD did not exist then. No links to anything.
I appreciate the responses and will try the suggestions. Thanks!

you know, i have heard something before about Audio CDs.. when you rip them to Mp3, the CD actually gets downmixed to two channels--left and right. but the reason the CD is 1411kbps is because it is actually digital audio, and it does have four channels of audio--left, left surround, right, right surround. but the thing is is that almost all devices that play CDs only use the main two channels, so the two surround channels are never heard or noticed unless you play it on something that supports surround..but even then it might be difficult to notice. it's just superfluous stuff that's hardly noticeable, but its still there.

As far as Im aware a CD is stereo, hence just two front channels (left and right) then when DVD-Audio came out, it was Center (speech) sub (bass sounds) front channels (effects) and rear speakers (effects) same as a DVD Film.. But I havent heard of a DTS thats a CD.. As far as Im aware that dont exist!!
Otherwise, just try Media Player 10 and see what happens when you try and play it in that.. Im lost with that one!

if 10 is anything like the predecessors, then it can encode to mp3...if you pay for the codec, which is nothing more than the free lame_enc.dll that freeware AudioGrabber uses..

Audiograbber is great!!! I was able to rip my Quadrophenia (The Who) CD. It only ripped it at 52kpbs for each song but I was able to convert the tracks to 128kpbs with my Creative Labs software and then load them to my Zen Xtra. Appreciate the suggestions!!!!!

if you got the LameEnc DLL that i pointed out, you could've just gone straight to 128 instead of crap quality of 56. LameEnc goes all the way to 320.

I downloaded LAME into the same directory but it still shows 56kpbs as the highest quality.

you need to click on the mp3 button on the toolbar, and down on the bottom, there's a dropdown box for internal encoders, and LAME is in there..if all you can get is 56kbps then it's still on the Fraunhofer codec..and they stopped development on that a loooong time ago, that's why it never made it higher than 56..
