he said "ripping", not "copying". yeah, nero works for copying and encoding TO DVD..but as far as i know, it doesn't encode from. ripping is like when you take that audio CD and turn it into an mp3 or wma...same thing with DVD to avi/mp4. i know those progs are out there, but i haven't really had any hands-on with it..so i don't know. the only other thing i can suggest, but you'd need a couple hundred gb of space depending on your collection, is to just make an image of the DVD..so if the original gets scratched/destroyed, just pop in a blank DVD, and burn the image and you've got another one ready to go.

dunno if this is what u meant but for decrypting i use dvddecryptor and for burning i use dvdshrink. the latter shrinks it down to fit on 1 non-dual layered dvd. im glad ive backed up most of mine because my little cousin decided the godfather collection would make great frisbees...in the snow...on the street...    :( :(

If you are looking to use Nero to back-up DVD movies, Nero's Recode (which is part of the suite) will do that IF you have other third-party software.

i too have a dual layered burner but no media, just too expensive now. and i can get regular dvd+-r's for pretty cheap around here.

what do you mean other third-party software. for what? i have dvdshrink and dvd deccryptor installed but i get errors at like the end of the burn. anyone know how to get around this? i re-authored the dvd in dvd shrink after de-encrypting it with dvd decryptor like i've read at some tutorial sites. 4 coasters man. i can't keep going at this pace.

ouch. never had that problem before. head on over to g4techtv's tech support forum (http://forums.g4techtv.com/categories.cfm?catid=64). over there, they seem to know a good bit about these programs and errors one may get.

i got a dvd to burn. what i wound up having to do for some reason is do the automatic detect of chapters and it finally burned. i'm still going to go to that site to read up in case any other problems may arise. at least i got it going now:)

I like dvd43free for my decrypter and it just runs in the back ground in my tray and use dvdshrink and it atomatically burns w/ nero. If the movie I'm backing up is less thean 4.9gigs I just go staight to nero w/ dvd43free in my tray!

You can get a DVD decoder plug in for nero 6 - I forget exactly what it is called. Recoder will only work if the third party codec is installed. And you are supposed to pay for those.
