Hello, I just upgraded from 512MB to 2048MB of RAM and just today I did a CTRL-ALT-DELETE to check the memory performance tab and it showed that I only had about 1.75GB of available memory from my 2GB physical memory (almost 300MB less). I found this odd since I haven't changed anything in my system and with 512MB RAM that would have meant I would have less than HALF of my 512MB memory available. I don't have any onboard video or anything like that... and I'm sure I was at least getting close to 400MB memory available with the 512MB installed. Is this normal?

Here is more detail:

Physical Memory (K):
Total 2095852
Available 1762452
System Cache 239000

Kernel Memory (K)

Total 65712
Paged 48712
Nonpaged 17000

And my processes, in order memory used:

svchost.exe SYSTEM 22,008k
explorer.exe USER 18,852k
svchost.exe SYSTEM 4,516k
spoolsv.exe SYSTEM 4,338k

svchost.exe LOCAL SERVICE 4,228k
svchost.exe SYSTEM 4,012k
services.exe SYSTEM 3,992k
EM_EXEC.EXE USER 3,708k
csrss.exe SYSTEM 3,400k
alg.exe LOCAL SERVICE 3,296k

nvsvc32.exe SYSTEM 3,032k
AsusProb.exe USER 2,856k

LOL................. remember that the OS consume memory, and that *missing* 300 MB is allocated for the OS!!!
Total is 2048MB RAM, and the OS use roughly around 300MB, so you're left with 1.7GB memory. Is that simple.............. :D
Yeah, unlocked the pagefile limit, your OS wont use swapfile that often and increase the performance in Windows............ my laptop with 1.5GB of RAM, the OS eats 650MB of RAM............

Thanks Obi Wan :)

BTW Zefram, I tried that RAMDisk program you suggested. It wouldn't work with the pagefile allocated to it, kept crashing. So I deleted it :(

Hmm.............. dont use the program then :p
Anyway, if you want to fully utilise your humongous RAM, i'd suggest you download and use this neat tweaking software..........
Tweak XP-Pro (http://www.totalidea.com/tweakxpdown.php)
You'll find this tweaking software easy to use............... i like the memory management section! Better than going to regedit and edit all the crapz yourself!

i use 2k, and after a startup, i've only got 130,000k used out of a gig of ram, and that includes startup tasks. 31 processes. I don't know where you people come up with 300Mb just for the OS or 650Mb...mine uses less than 100..
