basically you can't update XP unless you set the security settings so that it's the lack of security..nice. M$: making the internet safer by making you disable security.

Go to Control Panel>Adminstrative Tools>Services. Once you launched the "services" windows, check for the automatic updates, set it to automatic and click "start" to start the services. *see pic below if you're still blur!*

After that, go back to windows update. It'll work, i'd have this problem before and manage to get over it with this simple fix.

Microsoft just release a 12 patch after the initial release of SP2. So, dont be too proud if you have SP2, it have flaws ;)

Good then, enjoy updating your windows. Updating windows is a really sweet and wonderful experience. Sadly there aren't many people who appreciate updating their windows. LOL
After updating, you may disable it, it wont effect any function inside the OS...........................

Updating Windows? Why bother? Isnt there enough crap in Windows as it is? I just install Service pack 1A and thats it.. Nout more, never will be either..

Personally i dont see why people fuss over the updates, Microsoft doesn't intentionally make patch and like "hey chap, download this". Its for your own good. Its for the safety of the data and info inside your PC. And it was meant to protect your privacy.

Sure, sure, you can tell Microsoft to make the OS perfect before shipping them, but hell, every software out there have flaws. I'd bet if other alternatives OS like Linux or Macintosh, if 50% of the poeple use them, they'll face the same problem as microsoft. It doesnt change the fact that there is some nasty ************************ters out there who want to create nasty and malicious virus, trojans and dataminer and wrecked havoc to people around the world.

The windows will work without update, Microsoft never forced you to update, its all up to you. But i wont compromise the data and my privacy, so, i just "follow the stream" and follow Microsoft guidelines.

P/S : SP2 already became a compulsory download, see the news here (http://www.neowin.net/comments.php?id=27171&category=main)

I dont see the point mainly because I backup reguarly and I dont have stability problems or hardware problems with using the software as it is.

I dont like the horror stories I hear with people trying to install Service Pack 2 but I will admit, my friend that uses AOL and has Service Pack 2 installed, has no problems. Go figure?!

Personal preference I guess...
