Character count help sought

This is a really expert problem. I want to take a word document, and at the end of every single line, put in brackets/italics/something, the cumulative total number of characters in the document up to the end of that line! This is for a typing speed test I am making. Does neone know how to do that? Thank you.

Not really all that sure, but you could do it with a macro. If you did it in excel, it would be SOOO much easier, though it isn't exactly the best format for creating documents...
