Doesn't bother me any..I don't use bittorent :p

And I agree, it is rather funny that my major is in software, too, but I just don't care for some reason. I do try to limit myself though. Bandwidth has a rate limit just like IMs and such, only you don't get disabled, but a red flag shows up somewhere and your ISP starts being nosey. Happened to a friend of mine. His outgoing bandwidth was pegged for three weeks solid and his ISP had been watching him for about a week, and someone decided to upload a hacked copy of XP to his FTP server and 5 minutes later his internet was shut off and he got a phone call, a fine, a letter from RIAA, and wasn't allowed to get his internet back for two months.

i guess its not the people who make the stuff that are pissed about some kid taking it for free, but the people who own the company and had nothing to do with it, except get a percentage of all the money

How can they fine u, I mean how do they know who was at the computer. Or which computer on the network. etc. And if your ISP rats you out, wouldn't you just go to another one???

I dont think it's a matter of being ratted out by your ISP. If I wanted to I could go to my local ISP and ask them nicely for the records of ANYONE who uses them. They dont HAVE to give me the records, but there's no law saying they cant. So much for privacy huh? I read about that happening a while back, but things may have changed... so I dunno...

Well I would expect them to keep that private since I'm paying them not the mpaa, how bout a little loyalty to their customers. Unless they are forced by legal means of course. But the fine sounds a little funny. Since a judge would have to make me pay that, and it would be difficult to prove who did what in court.

Actually, I had a CNN article favorited for like, two years, but I cleaned my favorites out a few weeks ago and got rid of it. In early 2002, a new judge ruling from the supreme court said that all ISPs were supposed to turn you in for "suspicious activity" and if RIAA came along and wanted to know what you've been doing, they have to give the records over, no questions asked. So it's been like that for roughly the past three years, but like has already been stated, I don't think the ISP would just be like "How 'bout I go through and get rid of a third of my customers and make a bad rep for myself.."
