Hey, I didn't plan on getting my new system till the end of summer, as i mentioned in an earlier post somewhere, after my summer job, however i now have a part time job so now i can get it sooner :D So here's the deal, i've heard alot of good things about DFI and MSI...I'm leaning toward the MSI K8N Neo Platinum, because it's about the same price as the DFI lanparty ut nf3...but i don't like the yellow UV reactive stuff...so MSI became my first choice...anyway...is this a good choice?? or is there another brand that offers more performance?? (i've check benchmark comparisons and they're usually all pretty close)

Most boards that use the same chipset are pretty close. I've used both the MSI K8N Neo Platinum and the DFI LanParty nForce 3 250Gb, and I prefered the LanParty. I sold the MSI board and still use the LanParty.

Ok, So the DFI boards perform better?? I also heard that the DFI LP BIOS sucks...and that the Beta version is where all the goods are at...has this changed, or was even true to begin with??

Why not go socket 939?

I don't think that was true, well at least it isn't for my mobo.

i think the beta bios that i run is better than the bios shipped with the mobo.

Can't go 939...i'm on a budget of $2000 CAD...i've checked prices of all the stuff at different places and i can get a pretty decent s754 setup for 2k...
it'll be somethin like DFI lanparty UT nf3 250gb, with either a s754 A64 3200+ or 3400+...1024mb samsung tccd, and a 6800gt...that's the plan for main performance hardware...anyway, somewhere along those lines, i'm still looking for opinions and suggestions, so the plan is subject to change :) bottom line is, i don't think my budget will allow s939...but i'll look into it

k just checked...it's an extra $350 canadian for a DFI LP UT NF4 Ultra-D socket 939, and A64 3200+, with dual 6600gt 128mb...as opposed to my previous choice...worth it??

Also: I found places to get either dual 128mb ddr3 6600gt's, or a single 256ddr3 6800gt for around the same price, which one would perform best??

i would go for a socket 939 setup, even if it means a slower cpu, because you'll be trading that off for wider memory bandwidth. you dont have to go with a pci-e motherboard

you can get:
msi k8n neo2 platinum 188$
ocz 2x512mb pc3200 el platinum rev 2 350$
socket 939 athlon 64 3000-3200 196-249$ (winchester core)

thats not bad, you get a winchester core cpu, they seem to overclock the best. and you have dual channel memory

The single 6800GT would perform best. 2k CAD budget is plenty for a good s939 setup. I'd rather sacrifice the memory than the socket. You can still oc on dividers like I'm doing right now. My memory is only running 200mhz while my fsb is at 240.

2 6600s in SLI will be about 2x better than the 256mb single one becuase memory really doesn't play a large role in speed.

he said 2x 6600gts or 1 6800gt
