i've been wondering the same for a while, i dont think there too many cards out yet that use those slots, might be why they're keeping the oldschool pci slots around for a bit, despite the fact that when pci-e was announced they said it would not work with pci

When pci was first released, isa stayed around for quite a while. You could even find them on some socket 423 (pentium 4) motherboards. It will be the same way for pci and pcie. You'll see pci around for quite a while, untill manufactures begin to release new products that would otherwise use pci. I'm sure you can find some pcie x1 cards right now, but they are probably very scarce. If creative would release some new sound cards, they would probably be pcie, but companies just aren't putting out new putting out new stuff. They aren't going to start porting all their products to pcie because there really isn't any need right now.

they're not building new stuff cuz we have a stable platform already that works

PCIeX1 cards won't be released until there are enough people who can actually use them. Most cards manufacturers (Sound/NIC) do not make multiple versions of the same card for different buses. They will switch to X1 when the majority of people have the slots in their system.

tis true too:D

i think stuff like
sound
nic both wifi and cabled
tvtuners
usb2 and firewire port cards
slow raid and SATA cntrls :P
i mean it can take over any role of pci
because it's 2 times as fast and plus it's fullduplex

Actually PCI-Express was designed from the ground up to be compatible with PCI. Providing legacy support and a method for easy adoption was important if PCI-Express was going to make it as the replacement for PCI.

pci-x == compatible with pci because they are both parallel
pci-express is serial and to be compatible with a parallel std electronics and converters would be required
are you sure you dont mean that pci-x was designed to be compatbile with pci ?
because i sure never heard that that was the case with express

The plan behind PCI-X1 or -X2 slots are to take for PCI and be the new expanstion slots...for like Sound, NIC, and any other card that you have today that fits in the PCI slot....but like it was said in the here, only when the PCI-Express form takes full mainstream will they then make cards for them... I have seen a few NIC cards and video enhancement cards but nothing worth of intrest yet!!

Yeah I am sure PCI-Express was made to be compatible with PCI. The PCI-SIG has been responsible for laying out the standards for PCI, PCI-X and PCI-Express.
Here's a bit from their initial press release when they launched the PCI-Express specifications:
The PCI-SIG, the Special Interest Group responsible for PCI, PCI-X* and PCI Express industry-standard I/O technologies, announced today that its board of directors has approved the official public release of the PCI Express specifications. PCI Express is a new serial I/O technology compatible with the current PCI software environment that offers low-cost, scalable performance for the next generation of computing and communications platforms.

but softwarewise compatible is not really all that compatible
heck firewire and scsi are even protocol compatible but it's miles away from being
designed from gound up to be compatible

Remember the slots that were on some boards a few years ago called AMR (Audio Modem Riser)...they appeared on some boards for a while then disappeared due to lack of product support. I know of one product that is made for the PCIeX2 slot, but i think it to will lack support and disappear.

You could even find them on some socket 423 (pentium 4) motherboards...Yeah, a great example for some other boards like that is Giga-Byte GA-BX2000, and Abit KT7A (and the -RAID version, too). AGP2.0 slot, five PCIs, and an ISA all the way at the bottom.

Currently, about all ive seen is the dual TV tuners for computers on the PCI-E x1 slots
Belkin also announced some cards on PCI-E but i havent seen any, and they were expensive
PCI-E is the upgrade from PCI, like PCI was the upgrade from ISA
Eventually we will have stuff to plug into these slots
btw chazzo - you need to read the sig rule, that thing is well off

I found something else that is for the 1x slots! I was helping a friend try to troubleshoot his USB problem and found that they make USB2.0/1394a expansion cards that plug into a 1x slot.

yeah their the very expensive belkin cards i believe
Trouble with them is their like 5x the price of a PCI one, and no advantage - well atleast last time i looked
