View Full Version : Motherboard with AGP or PCI-e

I´m going to buy a new motherboard.I know that AGP video cards are cheaper than PCI-e for now.I can get a Asus A8V AGP8X for 119 Euros.The Board with PCI-e is expensiver.So,should I get the Asus or pay the extra for PCI-e?

odd where i'm at cards made for pci-express like gf6600GT is cheaper as pci-express then they are for agp

prob the same thing holds true for all gpu's which are made for pci-express
it's the bridg to and from agp which prob raise the cost

i have the msi k8n neo2 platinum, its pretty nice, mind you i had some problems when i upgraded, my psu died and took the new parts with it. so make sure you get a good psu. i would recommend the msi though, but the asus should be good too, as well as abits av8 i think it is

Look at what video card you want and compare the price of it's equivelant for PCI-e and AGP. The difference might make up for the cost or at least some of the cost of the pci-e mobo. I've seen times when the PCI-E card was over $10 less than the AGP. But i've also seen times when AGP was considerably less.

ya, gefore 6800s are cheaper for agp than pci-e, and its the reverse for the 6600s i think

I don´t want the video card for games,so a cheap one is all right.It can be AGP or PCI-e.The problem is soon AGP will be replaced for pci-e,no?

It will be replaced by pci-e fully by the end of the year or by mid next year or so. It would be smarter to get pci-e because of the upgradability just in case you change your mind and feel that you want to play games.

if its not for games then, just get something with onboard graphics...is there anythin like that on the amd side at all??

Onboard graphics will slow down the system totally because it uses system ram. Just get a low-end card like the X300 or 6200.

when you can usualy set it to use as low as 8mb, i dont think itll kill the performance all that much, besides if price is an issue and a capable graphics card isnt necessary, then why not. besides, mobos with onboard graphics are usually cheaper

Get the PCI-E board. AGP is getting old and PCI-E is now 'in'. You can upgrade in the future much more easily with PCI-E vs. AGP

Ok,I´ve just bought the Abit AX8.It has PCI-e so I bought it.The Asus had AGP8X slots,so didn´t have upgrade path and I choose the board with PCI-e :cool:

It depends on the type og work you expect out of your system. if its for gaming , then I reccomend PCI E ,AGP gonna be obsolete in another five(??) years or so. Plus there are some really cool PCI E video cards from NVIDIA and ATI .PCI E cards are now the latest in expansion cards....however, if the pc is for research (sic) work..AGP it is....

It's already obsolete, since PCI-e is a superior platform. It's just that manufacters are still going to support AGP for the near future until everyone switches over (so they can safeguard their investment until the AGP market dies down and the PCI-e market takes over). This always happens when new technology is introduced (for example, when DDR took over SDRAM).
