depence on the mobo, I like asus boards, but depence what you want to get out of it and what budget you have, you have to go through the different models and see what they offer and how much they are future proof
MSI................... i never had any problem with them, the last board i RMA'ed (my mistake, the HSF fell down to the capacitor and well, the board wouldnt boot :D - this board is in one of my mum's office PC now) only takes 3 days.
But well, MSI in america is doing bad................ heard many complains about the boards.........

MSI have good boards, the last PC I build, I used a MSI board. But I was laughing my head off, when I browsed the CD what came with it, it had a video on it of how to install everything, was funny for me, prolly for a beginner very usefull, but only if you have an other PC to watch it first lol

For the Athlon 64, you can't beat the DFI LanParty (skt 754 or 939). If I had to choose between Abit and Asus, I would go with Abit.

DFI's LanParty Series is the best absolutely.
Between Abit/Asus, I would choose Abit as well.

It makes any sense to have a video card and a mainboard of the same brand? For example Asus board and Asus card or Abit board and Abit card?It improves the perfomance?
I'd go Abit if you really want an Abit or Asus, otherwise I'd go with the DFI. I don't hear about as many problems from them lol.

No, you don't have to match brands.
