My wife and I helped my son move his things to his apartment. He has been going to school in St. Louis for two years now and he has lived on campus. This spring he and some roommates decided to get an apartment and save money on housing. He is almost all situated but he has no television or internet service yet. I talked him and his roommates into getting a wireless router for their network, and share the internet connection (3 meg cable). I just ordered his 802.11g network card from Newegg http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16833127136 and he'll have to arrange getting his cable service installed.
I'm feeling sort of lonely I guess, I'm used to opening the MSN Messenger and sending instant messages if he's online or maybe sending an e-mail. I'll have to wait till he's back online now. Oh well I just have to settle for using the phone till things are back in order
Today I setup his computer and printer. Doesn't having a computer without internet access just suck?

You're a pretty cool dad, who can set up technology for his son! :D It's always been the other way around for me (my dad is almost clueless when it comes to anything computerized).

I didn't mean to make it sound like I was paying for everything, I'm just setting up the hardware and helping clean the apartment. ;) The router Brandon and his roommates bought from Newegg but shipped it to my house since school was coming to a close. Brandon is also paying for his network card I didn't pick out just any card either this one is compatable with 802.11a/b/g and a remote antenna (for better reception). I figure that if he has to move to any different locations with wireless service he's covered for most systems.
I like helping my sons keep their computers up, it helps me learn more and you can't beat experience. Three sons and each has their own computer (job security). :D

nice, i had to tell a customer on the phone how to turn on their monitor today.
Apparently when I said press the button, I was being too technical.
You think that's bad, I had to walk this guy through sending me the info needed to generate an SSL CSR so he can get an SSL Certificate on his site. He thinks someone will hack his site about fishing in his town.
SSL = $300/yr
His site = $15/month

Yeah, my dad used to work for Johnson and Johnson, part of the ortho clinical diagnostic division, anyways they built this devise that runs tests of bodily fluids and checks for almost all know illnesses, very cool stuff, he had to go to some italian hospital because they were having trouble with the devise, they didn't plug it in, he got to go to italy to plug the machine in, hows that for fun.
on a side note if your ever in italy and you get sick, travel to a different country to get medical treatment, the country being on the Med. its almost impossible to keep the hospitals clean due to the humid tropic like climate, my dad found this out the hard way. ended up getting treatment in france or germany, one of the two

I'm having to do a lot to keep him going. Last night he came home for dinner, I charcoal grilled some steaks. Brandon left to go back to his apartment and his car developed some noises. It sounds like his brakes need replacing and I don't want him driving a car with bad brakes. Tonight he came home left his car and took mine to go back to St. Louis. I'm also the family mechanic so I'll fix the brakes in a day or so. I'll give him his car back and take mine home
Tomorrow I have to go to Brandon's apartment and be there so he can get his gas and internet services turned on. The gas company can turn the gas off anytime but they won't turn it on unless someone is there! Brandon just started a new job with Enterprise Rent-a-car and doesn't want to ask for the time off to be there (I don't blame him). He's lucky I'm off work right now for an injury so I have a little time on my hands. You all might wonder if it's worth it? Yeah it is he is a hard worker and a good scholar. When you know your sons are doing their best you help any way you can.
Tomorrow I expect to get his wireless 802.11g card and I'll have to see if I can get his network in operation along with his new cable internet service. I'm looking forward to that (the challenge). I may have to make a second trip to the apartment because FEDEX may not show up in time for me to take it with me on the first trip... They say there's no rest for the wicked!
me and the wife are planning on our first kid now(and man is it fun:) ). she keeps telling me not to make this an excuse to build another extra computer. what does she know? i mean the kid is going to need it for his education right? what'll the other preschoolers think when he says he only has a 3ghz AMD X2 comp? the faster the computer the faster they learn right?

Man, I think your wife is hip to ya!
Your thinking is a lot similar to mine...just keep thinking twins. :D You wouldn't want the kids fighting over the computer right? so you'll have to make two! Then your computer will have a printer on it and you'd want to network the computers together so they can all use the same printer. I have four computers on my home network when all the boys are home. All three sons are gamers and they like to compete so another reason to network.
My oldest son bought his own custom built computer, I wouldn't have been able to spend that much on him (to get what he wanted). My second oldest son was going to go to college and I wanted him to have enough computer to get him through school. I bought him a Compaq from Best Buy. My youngest son benefitted from me wanting to build my first computer and he doesn't complain at all about it's performance, it's only an XP 2100+ with 512 mg PC2700 and onboard graphics on an MSI Nforce2 motherboard. The boys know that if they want to upgrade graphics, sound the parts are on them but I'll install them for them.
Then I upgraded my own computer. Compared to a lot of you guys on PC Stats my computer is still pretty conservative but I'm not a gamer so I'm not the same market you guys are. My income is pretty conservative too I have to be thrifty with my bucks ($)
Good luck on starting your family! I hope whatever you have has ten fingers, ten toes, and is healthy. :)

That last part reminds me of that movie Romy and Michelle or somethin like that... "I hope your babies look like monkeys!" Some girls I knew last summer would always say that, and I thought it was pretty freakin funny.

The ten figers and ten toes is another way of saying "without defect"
defects would suck for sure but then everyone in my family is sexy so it'd be the sexiest 6 toed baby on earth! i mean really it's gonna be my child;)
