I just received my replacement chipset fan from ASUS. I was wondering if anyone has installed one of these and could explain or give some tips on installing it. The main question is does the motherboard have to be removed to install it? Other than that I should be fine doing the rest unless you have some tips

As far as ive heard you have to remove the mobo to clip off the plastic tabs underneath to board.

well i just finished installing it. had to take the mobo outta the case, push the on the clips so that more of it is exposed on the backside. cut off the triangular/pyrmaid shaped pieces of the tabs then the heat sink pretty much fell off. clean off the chipset. placed the new one on the chipset and pushed the clips in. that was it, it sucked taking out the mobo but it wasnt too bad. hopefully this fan works and doesnt die in a few weeks....

Yeah, how did you request for the fan replacement? Did they ask your for serial number or something?
Evil thought coming in..................... i can see a way to get a free 40mm fans and heatsink :D

well i just automatically gave 'em all the info. but theres someone else on this fourm that got one for free and he doesnt have the asus board. so i guess you could say that your buying a board with the defective fan and ask for a new one

I got one for free but the reason i asked for one was i was going to get the a8n-sli deluxe and wanted to replace the fan when i installed the mobo when i called they asked for the serial # and when i explained my situation they said no so i sent an email explaning the situatiuon and within 15 min i had a response asking for my shiping info. but at the last minute i decided to go with the Premium instead (with the heat pipe cooler) so i got a free chipset fan :D

Got an email address to ask for the fan? Or do I have to ring them up...

I'm gonna try and take my fan off to see what's wrong with it (if it's not bust...). So I just take the mobo out, take the clips off and then the whole 'thing' comes off? I don't really know anything about fans and heatsinks. They're joined together? Does it come straight off when the clips are removed or is it stuck on in any way? When I'm putting it back on do I have to do anything with thermal paste or something like that? You talk about cutting something...if I remove the fan I have now can it go straight back on or have I cut the 'thing' that is required to attach it?

Thanks in advance for answering my nooby questions :D

he doesnt seem to have done it propery so he cut it ;)

You push the tabs in /|\ looks like that and then u squeeze and it goes ||| and then slides off (with difficulty usually)
The fan should unsrew off the HS anyway, so u dont need to take the whole thing off, and if the fans stopped, i doubt u cant fix it, their not user servicable

Also putting it back on, yes u need thernmal paste, and after u unclip it, it should come off easy, only thing holding it will be the thermal paste

It was very nice of Asus to replace the fan. I called Abit for a fan replacement before and they wouldn't do it. So I told them I'm sending the whole board back for a replacement. That fixed them :)
