WinXP Programs Vanish

About 10 seconds after appearing, Internet Explorer completely vanishes from the screen, taskbar, and task manager. Updated full virus and spybot scans are ok. Some other prograns also disappear, although many ( including Mozilla )run without problem. A few others will not even load the home screen. I have replaced shell.dll in my WINXP Pro system.with no change. I've been battling this situation for over a week so any ideas are welcomed even if you are not sure of them. I do NOT want to reinstall or repair install WINXP oif I can help it.

Try this command (you will need your XP disc if it finds a problem)

Start->Run->"CMD"->" SFC /SCANNOW ".

This process takes between 15 and 35 minutes, depending on yer rig's speed.
What it is is the System File Checker. Basically, it just makes sure all the system files are intact, in correct versions, and has minimal corruption. (If any.)

If that doesn't work, try to uninstall and reinstall Internet Explorer. You should be able to accomplish the uninstall through the Add/Remove Programs. After it's "uninstalled", go to Windows Update and get it fresh.
