View Full Version : AS5'ed my laptop CPU

Since I got a pile of "dead" laptops from my dad's work a few months ago, I finally got around to tearing them apart and found one with a 2.0ghz P4-M instead of my 1.8. Finally got around to it today to swap 'em out, and I cleaned all the generic crap thermal compound off the CPU and HS and put the AS5 on the correct way (used a razor blade to make a micro-thin layer on the die) and put it all together and even in the first five minutes I noticed a difference.
The cooling fan runs A LOT less than before, not only less frequently, but for less time when it does come on. Before, if I got above 50% load, it wouldn't shut off, and I was doing some testing with it earlier and at 100% load, it managed to shut off for about 10 seconds at a time about every minute or so. I find that to be a very notable difference.

Impressive!
Think a P3-1Ghz DELL laptop is worth AS5?

Well the generic stuff that companies package with their products dries up and becomes less efficient. The 2.0 I was putting in to replace my 1.8, both of them the compound was so solid/dry that I could just peel it off like it was clay. No residue from it or anything.

I think I may have to try it. I have some generic thermal grease that may be worth it for now.. AS5 isn't cheap, so if the cheap stuff makes any notable difference I'll give AS5 a shot. Thanks!

I did notice the other night though, out of curiosity I unscrewed the keyboard so I could feel the heatpipe for the HS and it was almost too hot to touch and only gets warmer the closer to the CPU you get. I know it's a P4 and all, but I guess that's just how it's supposed to be. *shrug*
its good to have efficient HSF, since the laptop fans spun according to the temperatures of the CPU. Thus, if the heatpipe transferred the heat efficiently, you might find your laptop battery last longer :D

I never use battery anyways. Always plugged in. When I used my old one in school (celeron 1.1), I got about 2.5 hours with just using Word. I never have tested this P4 2.0 yet. Guess I could do that.
[Edit: it says 2:32, but I'd have to actually go until it runs out to know for sure.]
you know i haven't looked but do they make aftermarket HSF's for laptop cpus?

It'd be extremely hard to find one, that's for sure. Each laptop is so entirely different. There really isn't ever the same HSF between models. You can only make it so efficient anyways, and I think what comes with 'em is about as good as it gets.
Now, a stupidly funny idea I got the other night was watercooling. ROFLCOPTER. Wouldn't make it very mobile, but it'd have plenty of bragging rights. :p
