Hello everybody,

just to tell you that I have read some of the forums around here, but this forum is so big that's almost imposible to find just the thing you're after, so please excuse me if I'm repeating the question. If that's the problem then please redirect me to a thread where the answer is.

Question:
In my neighbourhood my friends and I have set up a very nice LAN, and now we can enjoy all the opportunities of it, but there's one thing we don't know how to solve it. The thing is that we have a computer that's connected to the internet (wireless), and everybody can access the internet through that computer. We would like to have something (program, script, whatever) that will monitor the data transfer for each person, for obvious reason. Is there some program (the best solution) that can track that traffic by mack address or IP? Or is there any other solution?
I know that Linux would handle that situation with no sweat (so I've heard) but I don't know how to set one, and is very expensive to pay to somebody to set it up. On that server we instaled Win2000. We also have AP/router on which we can permit or deny access to internet by mack address, but nothing more then that.
Please, tell me you know that there's a program just for this thing. Thank you all in advance for your answers!

Hmm monitoring on a per-IP basis is not so easy. You might need to buy a rather fancy, corporate style router to achieve that. I can't say I know of any software which does this. If you have a spare PC, then maybe you could stick Smoothwall on it (it's free). I think this offers bandwidth monitoring, but to what extent I don't know, and I doubt that the free versions will be able to show you bandwidth on a per-IP basis, although you might want to look into it.

Good luck, but I fear you may be hitting a brick wall... let us know if you find a solution.
