Just got this in my email. If handing over control of the Internet to the UN means less fighting between these money hungry, capitalistic, whiny companies; I'm all for it.

Two major Internet backbone companies are feuding, potentially cutting off significant swaths
of the Internet for some of each other's customers. After restoring connectivity to Cogent
Communications (USF's ISP), Level 3 will maintain this connection only until 6:00 AM, November
9th.

Should this feud not be resolved, you may experience connectivity problems from off-campus
starting November 9th.

USF is Cogent, but AOL, and Earthlink, and most of the ways you access the Internet from home
are Level 3. So, IF this happens, you will not be able to get to Blackboard, or your USF
e-mail, or OASIS from home. There are two
exceptions:Â tampabay.rr.com has established a direct connection to USF, so if you subscribe to
Road Runner in the Tampa Bay area, you will still be OK.

Some ideas you may wish to share with your students:
- If you are in Tampa Bay, consider switching to Road Runner.
- Plan to go to a USF campus to do your work.
- Contact your Internet provider and tell them you need Cogent Communications access (you
probably need to call the technical assistant for that, the regular customer service operators
will not know what you are talking about).
- If you are not in Tampa Bay try the local library or University.

One way to check if some public place can reach USF is to try to reach them from home. For
example, if you think you might try the library, try to log onto your local library from home.
If you cannot reach it, then it is probably NOT level 3, and therefore probably CAN talk to USF.

I'm safe for now, I have Roadrunner!
