it takes 28 scrolls of the bar in the windows loading screen for my damn computer to boot up. this is a fresh install of xp pro so it shouldnt be like that. xp pro is now on my sata drive and on a 10gig partition. it only has 5gigs filled. please someone help me figure out why this thing is so fricken slow starting up. oh, and ive already tried bootvis, and that got it from 38 scrolls to 32 scrolls, and i uninstalled some stuff to get it down to 28. thanks for the help.

28 scrolls seems to be a lot. Especially since a lot of programs don't load till after the welcome screen.
Try unplugging and removing hardware. I'd start with the secondary harddrive, then a stick of ram, the optical drives, etc...

Maybe the drive is in PIO mode instead of DMA? One of Colin's tips said that for some reason, XP likes to default to PIO, but I think that may not be true anymore since SP1. No harm in checking though.

I just say that because I've gotten reformatting down to a fine 20 minute art.
I forget that its hours of installing sh*t for other people lol

If you feel its a program thats causing the slowdown:
Go to Start-> run -> msconifg
Startup tab -> disable all
Restart and count.

go in msconfig, under the boot.ini tab, and enable the sos switch, or go in the boot.ini and add /sos to the end of the os line.
also, try disabling the nic driver and see how it starts up. if its alot better, try updating or reinstalling the driver
