i would have given him bonus point for quick thinking but still marked it wrong. kid deserves something for a pretty funny attempt.

As a teacher in training, I must say I'm not amused. Especially if the rest of the test looked something like this.
The Pythagorean Theorem is rather important, especially as the level of math increases.

To me it looks like the student took a jab at the teacher, or was trying to be funny in order to hide being stupid.

the kids obviously a smart ass. Thats just so great....hes like "here it is" LOL!!

Well technically he is correct. It says "find x" not "calculate x" so he deserves full marks or for that question to be omitted, since the teachers question was vague.

DKZ is right, you have to be more specific!!

If the kid gave ur reason, Id have to give him points, hes obviously smart enough to know the "intended" answer

dude im an engineer major. pythagorean theorem is useless. no one uses it. i woulda given kid full credit, because he did infact, find x.

Yeah really trig functions are so much more useful. Why remember both when you can do everything with only one? I woulda definitely given the kid full credit for making me laugh.

I had a work related test last year, composed of multiple choice questions. One of the question said "which website will give you the most information about LLU?"

It had four answers. The second address was actually about LLU (and was the correct answer) but it was an intranet addess. All but one of the four were addresses on our company network (which isn't externally available)

I knew which was the right answer but because the question was essentally flawed I put the web address down and argued the toss over it! :)

thats just being an ass :P

Possibly, but the guy teaching (who wrote the question) REALLY should have noticed that his question was wrong!

He was kinda embaressed and said he'd change it. But yeah, that was pure pedantry on my part. :)

? I'm an engineering major too, and I use it every now and then when working with power distribution problems and when I was taking vector mechanics. I wouldn't call it useless...

its like a shortcut. the only reason its usefull is because its short and easy. if it was a bit more complicated then i'd just use good ol trig.

AzN

Well..... on my assingments, it says find the VALUE for x. not just FIND x.

I love good ol'e trig, too. I would've given the kid full credit for that. In most of my classes in the later years of high school and in college, if you get answers wrong on a test/quiz, you can argue it and at least get a couple points back, if not all if you make a good enough argument.

Actually carpenters use that rule all the time to find out how square a wall section is...at least that's how we did it when I built houses etc...

agreed.

anyway i learned arguing with teachers is pointless, i've had a few bad ones back in highschool. the good news is i added 20 pounds on my curl in just one weekend.

This is the worst forum I've seen with people not knowing how to use a forum.
Quote, Delete post and edit post are real options, and they work!

There is no reason to double or triple post. I can't really say anything however, the "mods" seem to do it more then anyone.

§hinoßi

might as well double post, theres only like 6 active members here lol

NotMyBest2Day

I think double (or more) posting is alright, as long as it's been a few days and it's not really a busy thread. If you keep going back and editing like doing edit: and then edit2: then edit3:, it gets lost and basically nobody notices that it's still an active thread/post.
