I just installed windows xp x64 edition today and so far it's been going good. I know therealwesty made the move as well somewhat recently and had a fairly good experience. The only problem so far is that I can't find drivers for my epson 880 printer and the drivers for my creative sound card aren't quite as good feature wise as the XP ones were. Was it really worth it? That's a question that only time can answer. The only reason I installed it was because I needed a fresh install of windows so I decided to just install the x64 edition.

You will have driver availability problems. I recently made the switch as well, and the drivers for my motherboard are 'beta' and come with a big warning saying they might not function, and might cause damage! - Use at my own risk!
Everything works beautifully though.

One of the guys over at PlanetAMD64 has posted downloads of the Creative applications like the THX consol and the speaker settings tool. PlanetAMD64 is pretty good resource for 64-bit drivers, software and support. You need a user/password to download from them but it has been well worth if for me.
The Creative package Part 2 is posted on the bottom of this page. (http://www.planetamd64.com/index.php?dlcategory=5) The other part will be on the next page. Of course if something new gets posted everything will be bumped back.

I saw benchmarks that said X64 lowers your overclocking potential, and you get no major performance advantage when you do make the switch....so to that I say- Screw you P4, you can overheat in legacy mode instead of fetching 64bits at a time.

Thanks for the link therealwesty! Things are still going well for me. So far all my games that I've installed work great. Halo PC even runs a little smoother I think . All my applications also seem to be working fine so far. I'll run some benchmarks and see if there were any benefits or disadvantages.

P4 is 32 bit
you say overlclocking on X64 is worse, so why screw P4, this post doesnt seem to make sense

At first it will be faster cos u have less crap on
then u will find what stuff you dont have installed and its a downwards spiral
You cant compare it to your last install cos this one is fresh
Thats the trouble installing x64 over x32 and then trying to compare

Most P4s are 32 bit, but the 600 series(and a few in the 5 series) feature 64bit extentions; so P4 IS 32 bit, but it does do 64 bit.
Overclocking on X64 is worse, and because there isn't a big performance boost when using it, why get the same performance and only ~20% overclock when you can run in 32-bit and get, prettymuch, the same performance, untill you overclock ~25%
And my system recently is having stability issues and since my proc is hot I blame that. ;)

Guys, I don't know about the overclocking thing, but I've read a couple of reviews of x64 and they've all agreed that it is *much* faster - that's the only reason I upgraded.
It works fine for me. I have two PC's at the moment - an XP3200+ and an A64 3200+
The A64 with X64 seems a HELL of a lot faster that the XP3200+ did. I might be forced to give the old XP3200+ a wipe and fresh install to see how they compare but I'm pretty sure I know what the answer will be. :)

the 64 3200 and xp3200 are completly different proccesors though
its like comparing a van to a car ...

Explain? :)
I know they are different families, but I don't think they are quite as dissimilar as you puport.
Alright, would a fairer test be with the same A64 system, but trying both 32 and 64 bit windows? If I can find time I might do a dual install and try it...

I have 30GB of applications and games installed to my C: drive now, and games and stuff are still loading as fast as they were when I installed the OS. In fact I think I've installed and unistalled more software on my x64 installation that I did on my last few normal XP installations. I've been expirimenting and see what runs well and what doesn't. So far I've found <i>very</i> few applications that don't work on x64. Everything else seems to work great, sure there may be a small performance hit in my games and benchmarks, but it hasn't been noticable. So far games still run smoothly, and they load faster.
64-bit software is starting to emerge as well. In fact, one of my big motivators in installing the x64 Edition was trying out the 64-bit add-on packs for Far Cry. Using the 64-bit patch opens up more textures, more envirnomental details (more bugs and birds) and some destructable terrain I don't remember seeing when I played through it before. There are 64-bit versions of a FireFox, Prime95, Sandra, JavaRE, Firewall, BT clients... the list is ever growing.
Overall I've been pleased with the move to x64 Edition. And for all the rest of you out there, don't knock it unless you've tried it!
