View Full Version : Cooling Hot Case
Hi, im running dual cpu's beasty gfx card, 2 hard drives and im about to add 2 WD raptor 74gig 10krpm beasts, the case is 50 degrees centigrade at the m, and by adding this extra stuff i hink will rise alot, i need to get the case temps down, only got a 80mm fan on back of case to cool it down.
If i replace that with a 120mm fan should that cool it down alot more?
i was also thinking piggybacking 2 120mm fans on the back of each other then to the outer back of the case, would this extract even more air?
any help be apreciated.
bare in mind im going to add 2 74gb raptors and 300gb hard drive so any more money signifficantly is out the question as thats already going to cost about
270£
500$ dollers approximaty
chears for your time chris

Yes, an upgrade to a 120mm fan would make a noticeable improvement. Another thing you need is a can of compressed air. Looking into those heatsink fans I can see alot of the fins are blocked by dust. This does not promote very good cooling. What kind of air intake does the case have? you don't have any pictures of the front of the case.
unfortunatly the front of my case doesnt allow front air intake.
onlt have the back 8cm fan at teh mo, theres grill in the gront but the power stufs in front i looks there when i took the photos to see if i could rama 120mm in there :( also where that botom hard drive is that move up a bit and there with be 2 10k rpm raptors in there, bet they get hot:( damm it... dude im reading your water cooling project its insane hehehe

You are squeezing quite a bit of hardware into that case. The 120mm fan should help make up for the additional hardware, but temps will still be high. As long as everything is stable then it is nothing to worry about. If you do run into instability you will have to look into a different case.
ive not had any stability problems, the cpu coolers and teh gfx cooler sort any heat problems out,
gfx warning temp says 150C it can run to :D its on 52C now and the fan speeds up if it needs it also the cpu fans start up on 5-6000rpm, then after boot up then tone down to 2000rpm then they both aswell speed up if it ever needs
they seem to keepthe cpus very cool though. erm just thoguht that a 50C case wasnt good, was worried i heard Raptors generate alot of heat

I would just modify the side panel. Mount some intake and exhaust fans on the side with quite a few holes to allow proper ventilation. And Possibly some ventilation in the front. It would look like garbage, but it wouldn't run like it.
humm, i was thinking 120mmfan on the back for drawing air out of the case, would stacking more fans together help? like mount 120mm to case then another 120mm to the other one on the case, tehn i was going to fix the 80mm fan to the side panel to draw air in that way.
what think?

i dont think puttin multiple fans on top of each other would do much of anything except make an awful noise

If you add more power and solder in your own variable switch along with many other fans then you could control the speeds. Overloading your powersupply seems like a good idea to me.

Reverse your rear fan and make it so there is air GOING into your case, to reverse the pressure ... and then considere a blow hole in the top of your case ... more air coming in and less going out creates a positive pressure and the hot air WILL rise to the top ... :)

or just mounting a fan in the top would work
the PSU is probably blowing out so that wont help cooling if u have the 120 blowing in
Your gonna need to do somthing with that rig, theres alot of stuff in there and theres no way a 80mm fan can cope with that
Also dude if u could shorten ure sig, put it into a pic like us or whatever, that your posts take up a whole page on my screen
awww :P stil i nthe age on 13inch monitors for you at 480x600 then? :D
yea was going to get round to that but not ha the time really, i'll do it at some point :D
any more slightly more usefull ideas :P than boring holes everywhere:D
maybe i should dangle my case from suspenders in a wind tunnel???

The 120mm fan should do it. Mounting two fans together will help some because they are fighting the vacuum that is being created in your case.
You could also try to move your PCI cards around so that you have an open slot. That would allow you to install a slot blower (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16835888309).

no its a 19" LCD @ 1280 x 1024
Have a screenshot
http://img247.imageshack.us/img247/7736/stupidguy7af.jpg
Now sort it out n00b
its bad enough on a screen like mine, if u have a 17" CRT then its gonna be 1024x800 and if its a 15" it will be 800x600
Have some respect for other people on the forum please, just cos u have a 32" screen or somthing doesnt mean everyone else can afford one
Edit
Heres another 1 where 1/2 your post is your sig

sorted i not got time to make up a sig pic at the mo so just deleted it, hope it pleases ur majesty whose above and mighty over everyone else :D

dude your not funny, its not big
If you dont like it then get lost
I was trying to be reasonable to you but you are just being a right dick
so go cram it dude
you obviously have skills with this kinda stuff, it wouldnt take that long to make a picture based sig
you could have atleast compressed it down a bit so it wasnt 20 lines long
dude chill out!
i understood it and just deleted it because im working on a dissertation and checking forum now and then to see any usefull input comes about..
i know was big so changed it, i not changed that sing in ages!
you dfinatly need to lighten up :|
it was a fair comment i took in :S

Lets relax guys.
The siggy was fine. I would suggest typing it out like you had it, but use a smaller font so it doesn't take up so much space. :)
Image siggys tend to cause more problems because your browser has to load each one of them. Text is no problem...causes people to have to do more scrolling, but at least the page loads in a decent amount of time.
its cool :) i just hadnt done it in ages, was going to change anyways besides, nothing really usefull in it because i dont really benchmark as seems more games specific :P
just need to know if 1 or 2 fans be good idea really, and from my case best positioning, erm lowest price, case temps today are 45C and gpu is reading 51, not checked cpu's
just worrieda bout 2 extra toasty hard drives and the heat they will produce. any before you say anything avid im not making a dangle out the window air conditioning unit bolt of cooler, :P or strapping ice packs to the case each hour or submerginig it in cold water :D
hehe, crazy ideas

no they dont
it loads the pic once, thats used throughout the page, and its also stored in your cache so it doesnt load again

Not as crazy as some have suggested here in these forums ... hell, can't remember who it was, but someone suggested I just build a shelf outside my window and put my rig there! But to make sure I covered my hard drives in a towel, cause they don't like sub-zero conditions ... :D
Anything is possible ... :p
ok i have 1 raptor added and 2 120mm fans, the case temps have dropped an insane amount b ut i spose they do shift around 75 cubic feet of air "each" through my case now :D
ones directly aimed at my video card temperatures are now 39C for gfx bearly on the temp scale and the case is 33C
just got to wait till xmas for the other 74gb raptor and 300gb now :D

glad its all working well now :)
yea its gonig ratehr swift you could say :D alot of things now are prety instant, say loading afolder with thusands of images in, before took ages! now 1-2 seconds and its all there :D i love XP64

I am SO glad that you got the Raptor... I am looking at getting 2 of them for my AM2 build come April ...
if i get the 300gb drive i'm looking at next month i'll be eyeballing a dual raptor set as well. hopefully another 10k rpm drive will come out by then and drive the raptor prices down some or maybe even some crazy company doing a SATA 15k rpm drive:D
i'm looking at getting some airflow between the under portion of the mobo to drop temps some more since i won't be moving to water till M2. check my thread in like a week for an update.
you might want to consider a little modification work to add a fan to front of your case. the link doesn't work for me so i don't know what your case looks like. that would add some front intake and you could have the majority of your fans as exhaust. negative pressure actually is better for temps. if the heat cannot escape fast enough it will just build up.
ah i took the page down thats why.
i moved the rear 80mm case fan to the front, and it blows over the hard drive stack, then on the side of the case i havea 120mm fan blowing inwards at the GFX card and cpus, and then wher ethe 80mm was on the back theres a120mm now :D
masses of air goes through case :D
yea i got 2 Raptors 74gb, its damm fast! and then a 300gb 16meg cache jobby and then still got my 120gb in there :D
it all moves about very fast now :D
i'll get some new pics up from the inside:) considering how much kit there is in there the temps are really low now!

Tell me again how they obtain their "wicked seek times" ? Hahahahaaaa :D
i think its hamster power, they got millions of micro engineerd hamsters in side them pelting it round in circles in a kind of hamster wheel set up making them spin so fast! it must be :D its the only logical solution:D

You must work for WD, knew it ... only someone who has the inside track has that kind of secret info ... better watch your back ... :D
yea i admit it :) i do work for them:P we leaked it out so others can get that idea up and going while we bring out the new model:) steroid enhanced hamsters:P and then who knows what ;) i cant let on to those secrets though just yet
